How do you guys feel about the name Abel?

  • I have a son named Noah and I would like to stick to biblical names. I know the story behind it and it is kind of tough to get passed. But at least he was the good son? I'm thinking a lot of people these days don't even know the correlation to the bible.

It's awfully morbid, especially if you're choosing it for the biblical reason.
  • Do you like Seth? That was the third son...and goes well with Noah. Also try the baby name board. The ladies there know a ton about names and have some great suggestions
  • I'm not a fan because the only thing I can associate with it is the morbid biblical story.
  • No I don't like Seth. That's the problem..I'm really picky and so is my fiance. I honestly only like abel and Aiden and he doesn't like aiden.
  • I like it enough that I think the bible story won't bother me. I just am not a fan of all of the common names (michael, chris..etc) and I don't care for all the "in" names at the moment.

I honestly say scratch it and search for another biblical name if that's what you want to go with.. I think Abel is a nice name of you don't know the bible story behind the name.. But if your choosing only for the story I say scratch it and find a different name..

Edit because it posted before I was ready

I dig it. It's on my list for the future if I ever have a boy. Yes, it's a morbid story BUT, it is also Jax Teller's son from Sons of Anarchy if you're into that too. I think of that more than the bible story... (does that make me a horrible person? lol)
  • If you want a biblical name and aren't sure about Abel, what about Titus? One of our friends named their baby boy that and I love it!

I definitely didn't think of the bible. I like it.
  • While all I think of is the biblical reference (and the monkey that went into space), it's a very unique name. If you like it for your boy, then use it!
  • Never even thought of the bible. I thought Sons of Anarchy.

I know the story, but didn't think of it until it was discussed here. Its NMS, but if you like I don't think the bible story is a reason not to use it.

I thought Sons of Anarchy at first as well, which is probably why I loved the name so much lol. Huge SOA fan right here.

Count me in the horrible person category :) I immediately thought of SoA and not the bible :p

I'm with you ladies :) In any case, I like the name.

  • I immediately thought of the Bible story, but that's what years of Catholic school will do to you.  I'm not the biggest fan, but it's your call.  That said if you go with Abel, don't name your next son Cain.
  • It's NMS, personally. I remembered the name from the Bible, but I couldn't remember which one because I don't come from a religious family.

But SO MANY names can be found in the Bible, that it's hard to pick one without it being referenced there somewhere. Lol

Titus makes me think of Titus Andronicus, Shakespeare's bloodiest tragedy, full of rape, murder, cannibalism, dismemberment......

Yikes! I guess I'm not really up on Shakespeare. That's not a good association either... I do like the name, but that's pretty brutal.
  • If you're going for biblical there are lots of options that don't involve the name of a boy who was murdered by his brother...

    Daniel
    Jonah
    Micah
    David
    Isaiah
    Jeremiah
    Joel
    John
    Peter
    Ezra
    Ezekiel
    Adam
    Benjamin
    Jacob
    Joseph
    Gabriel
    Samuel
    Elijah
    Joshua
