6 week ultrasound....

Just had my first ultrasound and OB appointment at 6 weeks. During the ultrasound they noticed the gestational sac but no yolk sac or baby. They drew blood to see where my levels are at. I am somewhat irregular so theres a chance i ovulated later. Has this happened to anyone else before? Not gonna lie. Little worried and stressing out. Going to be a long 24 hrs until the blood work comes back.

Re: 6 week ultrasound....

  • Totally normal :) This is why most docs don't recommend doing a first ultrasound until after 7 weeks. I had my first one at 5w5d because I had no idea how far along I was. It was just frustrating as now I have to go back and I have all of this unnessessary worry.

  • It happened to me, unfortunately. Being that I've had losses before it scared the heck out of me. I was scheduled for another u/s a week later where they were able to see everything including a heartbeat. It was the longest week of my life lol! If u are not having any pain or bleeding I would say try to relax knowing that it's sometimes normal not to see a yolk or a heartbeat so early. At this stage of the game even a day makes a huge difference growth wise for the baby. Keeping you in prayer!
  • Thanks ladies. It helps. Still going to be a long 24 hrs. Next ultrasound in 2 weeks.
  • When I went to my confirmation appt, they didn't show me anything on the u/s and there wasn't a heartbeat yet. Went back 4 days later because I was bleeding a bit and as soon as the u/s began, the heartbeat popped up and was about 129 BPM and aligned right with the measurements. I was so amazed that all of that happened in just 4 days
  • I'm from the January thread, but this did happen to me. I had my first appointment thinking I was 6 weeks according to my LMP, but the doctors did the u/s and didn't see anything at all, not even a gestation sac. She said it looked like the very beginning of a pregnancy. I went back in 3 days later and they saw the gestational sac but nothing else. Apparently I ovulated late and was only about 5-4 weeks. I went back in 2 weeks later and they saw the little bean with a healthy heart beat! I was measure at 6w4d. However they found a subchorionic hematoma (SCH) and put me on pelvic rest. I had to go back for a follow up ultrasound about 2 and a half weeks later. I went back and my little bean grew to a little nugget with a heart rate of 167bpm! Everything looked good, there was still a little internal bleeding, but I never actually bled which meant that the SCH was being reabsorbed on it's own. I'm 11w1d today and will have my next u/s appointment at 13w. Stay positive and everything will be okay!
  • This just happened to me. I went in on 7/1 thinking I was 7 weeks. We saw an empty sac but nothing else. The doctor said I was just too early. They did not order blood work but told me to come back on 7/13 for a follow-up ultrasound. Longest wait ever. Trying not to stress. Thanks everyone for the positive stories! Keep us posted @jenniv82!! T&P!
  • I am in the same boat - 6 week ultrasound on June 24 with what appeared to be an empty gestational sac.  I'm scheduled to return for another scan on July 9.  The fear and waiting have been torture, but I'm trying to hang onto hope.  Praying for the best possible outcome for all of us going through this.  Hang in there.
  • This just happened to me today. I went in for an U/S to determine how far along I was. Thought I was 8 weeks according to LMP but that if I wasn't that far, the U/S would be able to tell me. Well, all we saw was a black circle, and the technician really wasn't able to tell me anything, so I have to call my dr. next week and find out what she thinks. I guess I might have to go back for another U/S. This is my first pregnancy, so I'm not really sure what to expect or how this all works and it's a little frustrating and kind of taking all the excitement out of it. Grrr.
  • I had an early ultrasound at 5weeks 5days and only saw a gestational sac and yolk. I went in again today, only 11 days later, and we saw the baby and heard the heartbeat. Baby is now measuring a day ahead. It's amazing how much changes in a short period of time. Best of luck and I'll be thinking of you!
  • I also had an early ultrasound around 6 weeks or 5 weeks and 5 days and there was only a yolk sac no baby. I was sent for a repeat at 8 weeks and there was baby with a strong heartbeat. I was just too early at first.

It could definitely just be too early. Hoping for the best!
  • I think 6wks is a cusp where some people see a little blip of a baby and some don't. My first U/S was at 5w 4d to check for ectopic, we saw the teeny sac, and depending on how the tech moved the wand you can see baby, but it was very tricky at that stage- repeat u/s at 7wks + a couple days showed baby clear in sac. Try not to worry, I think the fact that you see the sac at 6wks is a good sign, hopefully next U/S you will be able to see baby
