3rd Trimester

I found a lump...

I am 29wk 1d with my first little bundle of joy! I have always been in the habit of checking my breasts every time I shower (because of my pill) and when I was 16wks pregnant I felt a tiny little lump in my right breast that was hard to point out. Now at 29wks it has tripled in size, does not cause any pain, the breast it is in has not grown as big as the left and does not leak at all where as my left does (TMI I know). My doc has felt it and is referring me to my local cancer clinic for tests. I don't know why I am posting this. Im just so afraid and no one around me understands what I'm going through. Has anyone every experienced this? I'm only 20.

  • I've not been through this, but I am sending you a giant hug. I'll think positive thoughts that it's not cancerous.

Try not to think the worst. Pregnancy causes hormonal changes and changes in breast tissue are common. It could just be a cyst, which also commonly change in size during pregnancy. I know it's scary to let your mind wander, but I'm sure you're in good hands with your doc and they'll check it out thoroughly. Good for you for doing your breast checks, btw!

  • I can understand why you're scared. I went through something similar recently for a lump in my nipple. Turned out to be nothing of significance, but I now keep a much closer eye on my breasts.

As pp said, pregnancy hormones can cause big changes and there are lots of innocent reasons for lumps.

    Best wishes for your testing!

  • I know how scary this is. It has never happened to me while pregnant, but I have had to see a specialist twice for different lumps in my breast. Both times turned out fine, but it's scary as hell! Lumps can happen for many different reasons. DH and I tried to live by the motto, 'Don't panick until the doc tells you to panick.' But it's impossible not to stress. ((Hugs)) and I hope everything turns out fine!
  • I went through this but not while pregnant...it's scary and hard not to panic! However mine was just fatty tissue in the end and I was told I had a fatty boob! Also as Pp have said your body is doing weird things now while pregnant so try your best not to worry!! Your doc is referring you to cover their butt and to err on the side of caution, so that's a good thing! I did have a mole removed in December as well off my back and it was scary too but nothing came of it (I was pregnant and didn't know!)
  • I've been through this three times, and all 3 were benign fibroid adenomas. I know it's stressful, but given your age the overwhelming odds are that its nothing to worry about!!
  • I had a three-centimeter mass removed from my right breast, but not when I was pregnant.  It's a terrifying thing to go through, but most masses are benign, so please try your best not to panic until you know more (I know, easy to say, impossible to do). Mine was a benign adenoma, which we did not know until removal and biopsy.

I also was referred to a gynecologic oncologist about six months before I got pregnant, because an ultrasound showed what appeared to be a mass indicative of endometrial cancer that was the size of a lemon.  It was removed and biopsied, and determined to be a large, benign endometrial polyp, no carcinoma.  Again, terrifying.  Absolutely.  But the fact is, doctors will be very cautious about growths, even though most by far are not cancerous.
