How accurate was your growth scan?

Just curious for those that have given birth already. I've had several and the last one I had at 37 weeks estimated that DS already weighed 7 1/2 lbs!

[edited] of course my silly brain forgot the "pretty accurate" option and it won't let me add it now!

I've been wondering the same thing!

  • Friday the growth scan said she
    was 7 lb 15 oz
She was born Monday weighing in at
    7 lb 8 oz
  • 6/16 they estimated me at 7lbs1oz. She was born 7/2 at 7lbs8oz.

    So spot on for me.

  • Mine was dead on. I went to a scan at 37 weeks at he was 6.9 and that he was tall and expected to be 8lbs. I had a RCS and he was 8.2 when he was born.

A week and a half before birth baby was estimated at 4 lbs 14 oz... was born 5 lbs 9 oz.
  • Baby came out 1/2 lb bigger...so it was pretty accurate as it was done about 1 or so weeks before birth.
  • At 37 weeks my growth scan was 6lb 2 oz. I had her at 38+5 and she weighed 6lb 15oz.
  • July 1st estimated at 6 lb. 9 oz.

Born July 3rd at 5 lb. 12. oz.
  • Baby measured smaller. But not by much.
  • Ours was really close. They said she was about 4 lbs, she came out 3 lbs 9 oz
  • June 23 scan showed 7lbs 8oz. Born June 30 at 7lbs. 10oz.
  • Right before he was born was told he was going to be 8 lbs 11 Oz he came out fairly close at 9 lbs 2 oz
  • There was no option for it being exactly right, lol, but my Dr said 8lbs 5oz and she was spot on!
  • How is everyone getting growth scans so late in pregnancy? I'm jealous. My Dr stops ultrasounds at 20 weeks and thats the last 'growth scan' we had. :(

I was seeing a maternal fetal specialist until about 34 weeks with growth scans and had a final growth scan at about 37 weeks. I think it just depends on the doctors. I thought it was at least relatively common to do at least one in the third trimester.
  • Doctor said baby would be around 9.5lbs, she ended up being 10lbs 6ounces.

Never had a growth scan with any of my three.

Even as a high risk pregnancy and having more ultrasounds, they've never checked the size of the baby - just the amniotic fluid and placenta location. My OB doesn't trust the ultrasound predictions of growth and ultimately it doesn't matter for when I'll deliver.
  • When I told my OB that the maternal fetal specialist wanted to one more growth scan a week before my SCS My OB said "it doesn't matter how big the baby is, we are going to deliver it anyway".
I had it done anyway today and they estimated him to be 9lbs 7oz already :-O

I'll be back next week to let ya know how accurate it was.

I have had to have growth/position ultrasounds every other week since I hit 32 weeks. With me we had a scare about low amniotic fluid as well as baby has been breech so that is why they have done so many with me. My last U/S at 37.5 weeks they said baby was measuring in at around 8lbs so will see how accurate that is when I have my SCS on Monday at 39weeks!
  • Mine was off by 6 oz. Pretty spot on if you ask me!

Had an estimate with the anatomy ultrasound at 18 weeks, but other than that no growth scan. When I asked my doctor about how big my baby was at 36 weeks he put his hands up in the air and said about this big LOL

    Hello,

Last week I had an ultrasound done on my LO. She was estimated at 5.15 pounds at 36 week and a few days. I cant remember her measurements. She said that's the 50th percentile. Is that ok? I was reading that the baby should be 6-7 pounds already. And I also see plenty of comments about how the measurements and weights can be up to 2 pounds off. How does that happen when she is actually measuring the kid??

The drs actually moved me back a week to 36 after scan when Ive assumed I am 37....

You are taking a 2D image and not taking into account any fat on the baby just measuring the bones basically. Plus baby is squished to its hard to get a decent measurement. My best example is looking at a picture of a baby, taking out a ruler and trying to figure out how much it weighs from that.

  • the PP is a good response. that's how they estimate. 50th percentile is good. it's average actually. it means baby is assumed to be 50% bigger than other babies of the same gestational age.
  • I had routine scans and at my 37 week ultrasound he was estimated 7.5 lbs. at 39+5 (the day i got sent for a semi-emergency CS) he was estimated over 8.5 lbs. he came out 7 lbs on the nose.
