Food Poisoning/Listeria

I am almost 24 weeks and last night I ate a bunch of homemade guacamole at a happy hour. It tasted fine, but I don't know how long it was unrefrigerated and it was hot outside.

At 2 a.m. I woke up hot and sweaty, nauseated, and sick. I had a lot of lower abdominal cramping and I was scared I was in preterm labor, but I did fall back asleep.

Today I still feel bad, but not like last night. But, everyone else who ate guacamole at the happy hour has the same symptoms.

I'm concerned I have food poisoning, or worse, listeria. I'm reading I can tolerate listeria much better than baby girl. She hasn't been moving as much.

Would you call the midwife on call over this? Not sure what to do, and I'm worried I'm overreacting.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Food Poisoning/Listeria

  • You're clearly concerned and I don't think you'll feel better unless you call. Give your midwife a call.

I'd call, just to be sure. If you do have it they'll give you antibiotics.
  • It's most likely not listeria since it was only hours until you were sick. Listeria takes at least a few days usually, and can take as long as months for symptoms to show-which are generally flu like with diarrhea.

I bet the guac just bothered you, but like pp said, it's worth the piece of mind to call your midwife and at least talk about your concerns.
  • Call for peace of mind.. But also know that if it was a freash guac, nothing in it needs to be refrigerated. My ob mentioned that a 12 hour stomach bug has been going around my area, so it could just be that, but never hurts to check it out
  • I had terrible food poisoning at 19 weeks and went in to the ER because I was so dehydrated from being sick.  They gave me some fluids and baby was completely fine.  If it was that soon after you ate it, your body most likely rejected whatever it didn't like.  Give the midwife a call but try to relax and drink lots of water/gatorade today!

  • I called the midwife and she said both me and the baby are likely fine and it's just a bug or food poisoning but unlikely to be listeria. I can go in for monitoring if I want, but I don't feel the need to. There's no good way to test for it either.

I'm working on staying hydrated and resting.

Thanks for all the reassurance it's okay call. I worry I'm being paranoid or anxious.
