Cat litter

My husband seems to be slacking and thinks the two cats one litter box only needs to be scooped once a week now. I'm dying over the smell and he gets upset if I ask him to do it more. So, when can I start scooping litter again? I'm planning on breastfeeding if that makes a difference.

  • I believe that the risk of contracting toxoplasmosis through cat litter is only a danger while pregnant, not while breastfeeding. I am not positive, so check with your doctor!

  • I have the same issue with my DH. He thinks its okay to wait until one decides to crap next to the litter box before emptying it. Oy!

  • My DH had to leave on a course (military) half way across the country for 7 weeks (he got back about a month ago). So while he was gone, I invested in a gas mask from Home Depot so I could clean the litter box.. Worked like a charm

Once a week really that's so not often enough my husband clears ours once a day. You should tell him to stop being so freaking lazy and clear it out more often. Especially if the smell is bothering you, I mean would he wait that long to take out the trash? If he refuses I was told if you cleared the litter tray prior to getting pregnant you're probably immune to the parasite by now. And there is really only a risk of catching it from outdoor cats but obviously always wear gloves and a mask if you have one just in case.
  • My DH has been bitching all weekend because he has to clean stinky cat pee because he let the litter box for our one cat go over 2 weeks! So naturally, kitty got mad and peed all underneath our basement stairs (concrete floor). Sorry buddy, this is all because of your slacking! He's been traveling a lot lately for work but he's been using that as an excuse to be EXTREMELY lazy, it's driving me nuts!
  • I didn't stop cleaning litter with my last one or this one. We have the 99% dust free stuff and I just wash my hands right after I'm done

  • I never stopped cleaning my cat's litter box. My kitty stays indoors. My understanding of toxoplasmosis is that it comes from the cat's contact with the outdoors--critters they eat and dirt they dig in. You should be fine as long as you wear gloves and wash your hands.

  • Once a week? That's crazy. My hubby cleans it every night he comes home from work and we only have one cat. Sometimes I gotta remind him but usually he can't stand the smell himself. I did clean it twice myself. But I covered my face and washed my hands well afterwards.
I don't know anything about breastfeeding and cleaning the litter box. Definitely something I gotta look into.
  • I do have a friend who contracted toxoplasmosis from her cat's litter while she was pregnant. Her baby was fine but she herself was violently ill. It's made me a little more nervous and cautious about it I think!
  • I work in Humane Ethics & Animal welfare (in other words, I am dealing with homeless cats daily) - in addition to having my own cats.

Daily cleaning of litter boxes, with immediate hand washing afterward, is the best way to avoid a toxo infection. Indoor only cats who have been with you over 6 months are very unlikely to infect you (if there have been no signs of diarrhea, etc).

WAITING MORE THAN 24 HOURS to dispose of cat feces is the main cause of transmission through aerosolized particles!! (The poop has dried enough by then for particles to get in the air when cat scratches at litter or you disturb it by scooping). Spray your litter scoop with a disinfectant after use, wash your hands, and CLEAN THE BOXES DAILY!

Through work, we are currently doing a research project on coccidia in cats (requiring collection of fresh feces from new intake cats in shelters). Attentive hygiene is enough to ward off any risk of infection. Risk from your personal cats is substantially lower.
  • I work at an eye doctor and this is a valid concern! I would stay away from cat litter at all costs. It's not worth the risk!
