Reading to baby

FTM...when did you/will you start reading to LO? I've heard it doesn't matter at this age what you read so you can read a magazine, it's just the sound of your voice...thoughts?

Re: Reading to baby

  • I'm reading to our baby and she's almost 6 weeks. No matter what just talking to them I think is key. Just trying to engage our baby and getting her to make eye contact I think is awesome.

  • We read a bible story every night from a children's bible. Have done that since the beginning.
  • I've been reading to baby boy since he was in the womb. He is 7 weeks and is already showing preference towards different books.

    Current favorite books:
All the Ways I Love You (hands down favorite)
    Five Little Monkeys
    Goodnight Moon
    Time for Bed
  • We read to LO occasionally and DS every night. We started reading as part of DS's bedtime routine at 8 weeks, when he had settled into a schedule. He loved it then and still does now. He's always had a preference for rhyming books.
  • We read to DS everyday after one if his naps and started when he was 2.5 weeks.. He loves it!
  • I read aloud a little bit while LO was in the womb, and now during the evenings while DH plays a little PlayStation, I'll read to LO (and DH). LO is only 2 weeks old so its more the sound of my voice he is interested in. I've been reading a Jack Reacher book, lol. LO enjoys it, tho, he usually sleeps or lies there quiet. (Could also be he is in a post feeding happy place)

  • We read to lo every night at bedtime. She is getting better and better at looking at the book and following along. She is 5 weeks. I'm going to start the petit Prince with her soon. I also downloaded a bunch of classics that I've been meaning to read that I'm going to read to her.
  • We read to our 3 year old at bedtime and several times a day in the winter. With summer outdoor activities we read a little bit less but still several hours a week. LO tags along for those sessions and I've started asking our 3 year old to pick out a baby book for his brother each reading session. On the few occasions I've read just to LO I've picked books with simple graphics, bright colors, or faces and focused more on showing him the pictures. I feel like his environment is very language and music rich but sometimes visually boring because of he's not a fan of seats or swings and is often being worn or is flat on his back.

DS1 liked being read to as a young newborn but then hated it until about 18 months. Since then he's loved books and reading and will look at them on his own for hours. I say this because we really worried about his lack of interest at first. Stick with it, they figure it out.

  • My husband started reading the Harry Potter series to LO while she was in the womb so she could get used to her voice. Now he still reads to her almost every night. It adorable to see them cuddling on the couch reading. And a bonus, I get to hear Harry Potter without having to take the time to read it.

  • May lurker mom.  I wanted to start right away, but my baby was/is just so cranky, I couldn't find three minutes of happy peace to try.  That being said, I did today, finally, get a book in!  Hoping to get time daily now, though bed time is her crankiest time just yet, so I won't even try the bed time story until things improve.

So do you read then feed, or feed first? My LO is out after feedings so I guess I'll have to do read first.
