Night feed?

DS does pretty well at night, sometimes giving me 5-6 hours of sleep and then usually another 2.5-3. Lately I've been waking up to him making noises so I get ready to nurse (turn on a lamp in the nursery, go to the bathroom, etc). When I come back to our bedroom he's often fast asleep. So I go back to bed and he will sleep sometimes another hour or two before he makes another peep and we go to feed. Even then I'm sometimes wondering if he would go back to sleep if I just left him or if he's truly hungry right now!!

So my question is - at what point do you actually take LO to start nursing in the night? Do you go at their first noise? Wait until they're full out crying? Or something else? I'd love for him to do a longer stretch at night if he would but I also don't want to deprive him if he's hungry. I try not to let him get to full blown crying during the day and watch for his hunger cues but it's a lot harder at night.

Oh, I should note that he's gaining weight like a champ so I'm not concerned about him not eating enough (7lbs 11oz at birth - 11lbs 11oz at 7 weeks).

Thanks in advance for your help :)

I used to pick DD up as soon as she makes a sound, then i noticed that she goes to sleep so sometimes she's not hungry she just woke up. So now i wait until she starts making irritated grunts or starts crying to pick her up.

Sometimes she starts off with a cry, in that case i wait too cause it could b a bad dream or gas and she sometimes goes back to sleep too.

DD sleeps in her rock and play next to our bed. She does the same thing - wakes up making tons of noises but sometimes falls back to sleep. If she goes more than a few minutes I check to see if she's eating her hands and if so pick her up to eat. Unfortunately the only way I can see her in our dark room is to shine my phone on her on the dimmest setting which I feel terrible doing but I figure turning a light on would be even worse.

I shine my phone on mine too! Lol Definitely not turning on a light!
  • If he isn't making angry or frustrated sounds and isn't crying, I usually go over, check his diaper (change if needed) and then give him his pacifier, if that settles him I'll go back to bed. If not, then I get up to feed him.
  • Your post is exactly like my little guy. He will make some noises so I get up go to the bathroom then make my way into his room and by the time I get there he's sleeping quietly. So I stand there for a minute to make sure and if he doesn't stir I go back to bed. Now I actually wait in bed and listen/watch the monitor before I get up. Last night he slept almost 8 hours without making a peep. So I think it's important that if they can get themselves back to sleep to let them. I he was truly hungry he would wake up and let me know. I should also mention that DS is also gaining like a champ, 9lbs 10 oz at birth and last week (7 weeks) he was 14.5 lbs. so I don't think I'm depriving him! He also feeds about every 2 hours during the day so I know he's getting lots. I would continue to do what you're doing, you know what feels right!
  • Wow I thought I was the only one and that I was misreading cues!! DS used to fart and poop himself awake so I'd wait for whimper cries to get him. I made the mistake early on that every little movement and fuss meant he was hungry or wet. He's 7 weeks and I guess now is the time when they learn how to poop. This morning he was grunting terribly so I just let him work it out. Then he fell asleep for an hour. Then he grunted and face was bright red. Then fell asleep. Lol! I just wait now til he cries out for attention/is uncomfortable.
