How long can you get away with not telling?!?

So I'm 10 wks now, and me and my SO have decided not to tell our families until our ultrasound and testing on the 23rd of July, so if all goes well, we will tell our families and friends in early August...

As for work, this is so delicate to me. I am on contract, and I'm expecting to have a contract come in for the beginning of September for one job (which finished early December). And I have another contract in waiting that will depend upon my performance in August.

Now my issue is that I'm pretty sure that if I tell them or if they find out I'm pregnant, they will not give me contracts in September, which would put me in a very precarious financial situation...

Does anyone have experience hiding pregnancy from work? How long do you think one can get away with it?

I would just need to the end of August or beginning of September, which would put me at 17-19 weeks...

Any advice?

  • I think you could wait, just don't wear super tight clothing- I would wait.
It's possible also that you're barely showing if at all still- everyone is 100% different and you could not pop until later

It also depends on any papers you signed when you were hired, maybe find those just to double check they don't say you have to tell them right Away with some weird clause they snuck in. I have no idea if some place would do that or not but just in case.

  • I had a former co-worker hide her pregnancy til around that same time frame. She just started wearing a lot of looser, flowy tops. She shocked everyone on Halloween when a lot of people dress up at work and she wore a tight top that showed her cute little bump. It's totally possible but it also depends on your body, I can't speak for everyone but I know I could have gotten away with that doing the same thing if I chose to.
  • Everyone at my jobs are asking me... I'm only 8 weeks pregnant but hate lying to people and saying that I'm not. My breast are HUGE and that is the give away to people.
  • Check your state employment laws. If they know you're pregnant it may be considered discrimination if they choose not to re-sign you based on pregnancy, depending on where you live.

This really depends on how YOUR body changes in pregnancy. I would not have been able to hide it that long during my first pregnancy. Everyone is different. I was in maternity pants at 12 weeks, which is when I announced, and a handful of my coworkers (women) said that they had noticed that I looked "bigger" and a couple people said that they noticed my boobs were much bigger (older ladies, of course. Who else would do that!?) From my personal experience and what I've heard other ladies say, being thin really makes any change stand out more and makes it harder to hide vs having a little extra weight to camouflage the bump.

  • Well... I guess this may be the only time I am grateful for the fact that I'm plus sized to begin... I have 38 G/H breasts so hopefully a little more won't really be noticeable either... People who know me well (like my mom) have been asking because I am pretty bloated, but I hope most just won't think of going there... It does suck about the work and having to hide it, but since it's contract by contract it's easy for them not to give them to me. And I need to work now, because hopefully come January I will unable to commit to other contract because I should be giving birth in Feb:)
  • I'm in a similar situation. I start a new job end of August and its 12 months long -- although not sure how maternity leave will be figured out. Either way, I plan to wait until at least September to tell them so they can get to know me first. I'm hoping to disguise it and keep exercising until then to hide any extra bloat.
  • I think you can totally hide it till 20 weeks. I'm tall (and not particularly heavy 5'9/160 lbs) and wasn't obviously pregnant until about 24 weeks last time. I just looked chunky. I went on an interview around 16 weeks and had no trouble disguising it with a flowy tank and cardigan.

I have no idea when you'll start showing, but if you don't show, I think it'd be easy not to say anything.
