Centering Pregnancy...anyone heard of?

My ob's office mentioned that they participate in Centering, it sounds like you meet with a group of women due around the same time as you instead of having your private appointments.  Has anyone had any experience with this?  Pros and Cons?  It sounds like it would be great if this were my first pregnancy, but not sure if I would get a lot out of it since this is my second.
Just curious if anyone has any feedback!  I have a few weeks to make my decision if I want to participate.
Thanks!

  • You surely will get something out of it but you will also be a source to the FTM there.  If am assumed that they are run by a professional like group meetings for other things so you will have a place to raise concerns to them.  (I have a chronic disorder and have a group meeting every couple of months to discuss symptoms, life impacts, frustrations and coping mechanisms).  Its a personal decision but if you feel like you have the personality to open up to a group it may be an interesting way to do it the second time around.

  • Instead of private appointments? So your prenatal care comes from group sessions, or am I totally misunderstanding this concept? What about HIPAA?

  • Lurker here but my office does the same thing and I love it. It's actually very common where I live.

We go in to our appointments as a couple and each of us meets with the midwife or OB for a few minutes to get blood pressure, baby's heartbeat, weight, measurements of the uterus, etc. During that time the rest of the couples mingle and eat food (they usually have some kind of entree and a fruit/veggie tray) until everyone has been seen so none of that is in front of everyone. Then we all sit together afterwards and ask questions, discuss our pregnancies and learn a new topic (breastfeeding, safe SLEEP practices, etc.)

I have a few mom's in my group who have more than one kid, one is even in her 5th pregnancy right now so I think you would still get a lot out of it.

All ultrasounds and lab appointments are separate from the group appointments so you go in at a different date and time.

I honestly see no cons. It's better than driving to the OB just to be seen for 2 mins. Also it gives the staff an opportunity to get to know you better before you go into the labor process together, which is awesome.
