2 Markers for DS?

i had one for T21 (cardiac something) and T18 (cyst on head). The tech and doctor that came in to talk to me didn't seem too concerned but I am still worried a bit.

Has anyone else had more than one marker during their scan?

Sorry for the lack of medical terminology, it's difficult to remember exactly what was said.

Re: 2 Markers for DS?

  • I haven't had any experience with this but my fiancé's oldest had a high risk of DS from the blood work and a 1 soft marker on the US. He was born perfectly healthy without DS. Did they tell you at your AS? Or did they tell you later at you following doctors appointment?

I hope and pray that everything will be okay! Stay strong!

Thank you, @ASalton1 . Today was my anatomy scan and they told me. Trying to just relax until we get all the results back and speak with our doctor.

That's the best think you can do! Just relax and try to think positive thoughts! The only way to 100% diagnose a genetic defect is by CVS or an amniocentesis, an ultrasound is a screening tool and isn't a diagnostic tool.

    *hugs*
  • My 12w by scan came back with high measurements, and after seeing a specialist who did another ultrasound and blood test, my little guy still has a marker. But some of these markers can be really soft markers, mine has fluid in the kidneys, but apparently that is really common in boys anyway. So if the doctors aren't super concerned, try not to focus on it. My blood test was more what I focused on and they told me I had really low numbers on all the T's. I'm sure everything will work out for you, don't get too worked up!

The heart marker is called an echogenic intracardiac focus. It's a small amount of calcification in the heart. We had this on our scan as well. If you search those terms you can find more info and some really good support. We had our follow up ultrasound today for it (I am now 24 weeks, they saw it the first time at 20 weeks). The other marker you mention is called a chorid plexus cyst (I think I spelled that correct). And some other ladies have encountered this as well. I know it's a lot to take in at the ultrasound and really scary. Both markers are condsidered soft markers. Try not to stress about it! Do you have a follow up ultrasound?

ETA: the echogenic focus has no impact on the heart function.
  • No advice or experience but I hope your baby is healthy and you find nothing to stress about! <3

I was afraid to research anything. I have anxiety and I'm trying to not focus on those things too much.

Thank you ladies soo much for your support. <3
  • I have no experience, but I just wanted to send T&P! I am sorry your going through this and really hope you get answers quickly! Keep us posted
  • Hi, I just wanted to say that I know what you're going through and I'm so sorry. It's so tough. 2 is not really very many, and if your doctor was not that concerned I wouldn't worry. Did they recommend additional testing?

My tech straight up told the doctor she thought my little guy has T21, and the doctor told me she's only right about 20% of the time. So I'm preparing myself and doing the materniT21.

BUT, one of the soft markers was a small nasal bone. She couldn't get a good profile shot because of his positioning. I found my 15 week US with a great profile and it's not small at all. My baby has short femurs but I'm under 5 feet. So I think there's some wiggle room with mine.

The US is not everything. Plenty of people that had soft markers have babies without chromosomal anomalies. Plenty of people that showed absolutely nothing on US have babies with them.

Just know your baby will bring you so much joy regardless, and more than likely will be healthy. Sorry so long. You're not alone. I've had a rough go of it, too.

A lot of the posts I have seen about the cyst, it ends up going away on its own. Definitely talk to your doc about all your options. It will help. Keep us all updated too! Sending you happy and healthy thoughts.

    Thank you!

The doctor did recommend additional ultrasound screenings and amniocentesis / bloodwork.

My SO and I had decided we weren't going to do the amniocentesis early on in pregnancy.

I imagine we may discuss the bloodwork and additional ultrasounds with our doctor.

Either way, we will love our child and, as @scuffles said, he will bring us so much joy regardless.

@scuffles , I'm sorry you've had such a difficult time as well. Positive thoughts and hugs your way!
  • My oldest has Ds! He's 6 years old now. He's amazing. No matter what it will all be ok! I promise!
