Infected belly button on 5 wk old.

Last night Daddy noticed that LO has a slightly swollen belly button. It had a light red ring around his whole belly button. I waited until the morning to see if it looked any better, so this morning I looked and his belly button looked like a cats eye marble. Purple with a green line through it. I take him to the doctor. They weren't worried at first. She said it was probably a piece of umbilical cord stuck in there, but just to be sure she poked a tiny hole in the green spot. Pus everywhere. About 2 ml of pus came out and after 10 minutes of pushing pus out she called another doctor in for his opinion. He had to call the hospital for their opinion. Now baby is prescribed a hardcore antibiotic and a culture was sent off for Staff. Hopefully it's not Staff because then he will be hospitalized. :.( Everything else was good, no fever, wet diapers, up 4 lbs. I don't know what happened! He gets a bath every night, washed with soap every two days. Poor baby. They said if we hadn't caught it so soon, he would have gotten really sick. Left baby at great granny's house so I can try to find this damn medicine. So far no luck, but the lady at the pharmacy is trying to help me find the medicine. Has anyone else had this happen? The doctors were flabbergasted.
"UPDATE"
It came back as Staff. The good news is he won't have to go to the hospital unless he develops a fever. We were given another antibiotic which will hopefully help fast. Thank you all for the kind words. <3

  • Aww so sorry for you and your babe... good job catching it though! We haven't had experience but do have an acquaintance whose LO was immediately hospitalized.. not sure if that was just standard procedure here or if the baby had Staff. Fingers crossed that the culture comes back negative and your LO feels better so soon!!!

  • Hope your little guy feels better soon. I don't have any experience with this but I wanted to thank you for sharing. I'm glad you caught it so fast and hopefully now that you've shared this the rest of us will keep an eye out as well!

My baby's cord/belly button got infected when she was 10 days old. They immediately put her in the hospital because she was so young. Our ped said it was standard procedure for newborns. We were there for 2 days while we waited for the culture to come back.

All the hospital staff said it just happens sometimes and there is no way to know if it's going to happen. So don't feel bad! I was horrified too! The important thing is that you caught it so soon. I hope your LO gets better quickly!
