Weekly Progesterone Shots

Hi everyone,
I don't post much, but try to get on every now and then to stay in the loop. I'm due with a boy 11/6 and mom to an amazing 15 month old,

Anyway- my DD was 5 weeks early so I started the weekly shots at 16 weeks, they are becoming more painful each week, sometimes itchy days after... Anyone else going through this? Also as an FYI my husband is giving me the shots, not the doctor.

Re: Weekly Progesterone Shots

  • I'm getting them also (since 16 weeks). Have hubby run the injection site to push the liquid in after he does it. The nurse who does mine has been doing that and it makes a huge difference!
  • Loading the player...
  • Tomorrow will be my third and I haven't had any issues so far. My high risk dr did say to rub the injection site and make sure you alternate which side you get it in.
  • I don't have too much advice as I only received my first injection this week. I've heard that rubbing the injection site helps. Also try icing it before hand.
  • Thanks everyone- he did massage it last night so hopefully that helps!
  • My husband does mine as well.  They are still painful, but my husband uses ice on the area before he does the shot to numb it, which helps the shot portion feel better:)
  • I did IVF and had to do these daily for 11 weeks, so I feel your pain. Here's my experience - hopefully something can help you.

    • We did our shots in the morning so I had all day to move around, which helps the meds distribute and not stay in one spot and get painful.
    • Once the liquid is in the syringe, hold it in your hands for a few minutes to warm it up. This sometimes helps thin the oil out a little, making the injection easier.
    • Always switch sides shot-to-shot.
    • Definitely have your husband rub the area after the injection to help prevent a lump from forming (those get painful!!).
    • Have your husband rub the area pre-shot too to make sure where he plans to inject doesn't have a lump there from a previous shot (shooting into, or even close to, a lump really makes these things hurt).
    • If it hurts a lot when he first puts the needle in, make him take it out and find a new spot (you can change the needle out pretty easily).
    • Try bending over the bathroom counter or laying on the bed during the shot - you want that muscle as relaxed as possible before the needle goes in.
    • Ice before and heat after can help if they are still painful.

I hope all goes well with your process!

@chadsfiance thank you so much for the tips! These next 13 weeks are going to be rough but I know it's worth it. I can't imagine doing this for 11 days straight. I'm going to try the rubbing and icing the area before and after and make sure hubby is far enough from the injection spot.
  • I get weekly shots too. A nurse comes to my house to inject them. She does it so slowly. Takes about 2 minutes to do the whole vial. I've heard putting the vial in your bra to warm it a little will help too.
