Inductions opinions..?

My OBGYN offered induction at 39 weeks IF I'm dialted some on my own. She offered this at my very first doctors appointment. I've seen some other posts bashing this idea and let me explain first! I have no medical reason to be induced however, this is baby number three in 4 years for us. I live right at an hour and a half away from the hospital. (There are other hospitals between but NONE I would trust to deliver a baby) and baby number two came EXTREMELY quick. We were at the hospital for a total of 22 minutes before she was born. No time for epidural or even to sign in. Lol we were in the delivery room for 3 minutes therefore my doctor is afraid this baby will come quick as well and we won't have time to get there. I WAS induced with my first for medical reasons and it wasn't like the horror stories I've heard? It went very smoothly and was fairly simple (as simple as labor can be anyways) so I'm just wanting some opinions..? Even if you think inductions are a bad idea, please say so kindly.

Maybe bashing was the wrong word! I just felt like there is alot of negative opinions about inductions in general. Maybe I'll change the title. Lol thanks for the input!
  • I was induced with my first a week past my due date and went in to labor 10 weeks early with my second. I am concerned about this little fella a bit. I had no trouble with crazy contractions or anything else for that matter. If you feel more comfortable due to previous pregnancies and your own circumstances, go for it!! Best wishes!
  • I personally wouldn't opt for an induction without medical reasons for my previous answer. But I also understand your reasoning. I hope you, your partner, and Dr can make a decision that's right for you. Good luck with whatever you choose :)

Your fast labor/hospital distance is actually a valid reason for early induction. My only concern would be if the baby has grown enough at 39 weeks but you won't know that until an ultrasound and lots of times they are wrong.

    This exactly.

Agreed. The other post sounded like the offer was given the same way someone might say "Would you like fries with your burger?" Maybe that's not the whole story, but it certainly sounded like the doctor offered out of the blue with no reason given. You have a valid reason. If, after doing research and discussing with your husband and doctor, you decide to go that route, it sounds like it would be reasonable.
  • I'm kind of in the same boat. My daughter was born 4o minutes after my water broke and i started feeling contractions and I am 40 minutes from a hospital with no traffic. And to make things better, my son came on his own 2 weeks early after 3 hours of labor and my daughter was 3 weeks early.

I kind of wish an induction would be offered, but even if it was I don't think I will even make it to 39 weeks. This kiddo just might be born on the side of the road!
  • I was induced on my due date for no medical reason. I had a healthy and happy almost 9lb baby boy. It's mine and my doctor's choice and no one else's. If my doctor wasn't comfortable with it, i'm sure he wouldn't have given me the choice. Others might disagree with induction for their own pregnancies and that's perfectly fine. I've heard horror stories of women going two weeks overdue and horror stories of women inducing early. But there has definitely been more good stories on early and late deliveries than horror stories so to each their own and do it your way :)
  • Honestly, I see nothing wrong with wanting to plan your life accordingly so you are able to have a stress-free labor.

I already know I'll be induced bc of being high risk with high BP. Even if I had a perfect pregnancy, I would want an induction bc I need to plan ahead for someone to watch my 2.5 year old DD. All of my family in the area works at the same times and I feel horrible that someone is going to have to take off to watch her. Luckily though, my midwife and I have discussed this and plan on inducing at 38 weeks exactly which will be a Thursday in the evening. So my mom who is planning on coming up from 5 hours away will only have to take off one day as she doesn't work on Fridays. Since my induction with DD started a Monday night and she was born Tuesday morning I'm preparing for the quick delivery again.

When there are other children involved you have to plan for their care. Waiting to go into labor and scrambling to find someone who is available at the moment you go into labor to watch them would stress me out!
  • Plus if you live an hour and a half away from the desired hospital, you would run the risk of not delivering there if you just randomly went into labor.
  • I'm hoping they will induce me early this time. I had a 43 hour labor with DD and 23 with DS. Ds's labor was "enhanced" by some pitocin after starting naturally, because I had some complications so they were fine with getting him out a bit early. Even more high risk this time, with previous preterm delivery, blood clots, hyperemesis, and now GD. I'm hoping for a 38 week induction....
