Colposcopy & cervical biopsy

I'm 9 weeks, and my pap was abnormal, the doctor wants to do a colposcopy and a cervical biopsy, I'm scared I'll miscarry, has anyone had his done before while pregnant?

Re: Colposcopy & cervical biopsy

  • I had the biopsy done before I was pregnant but the procedure where they cut out the bad cells was done while pregnant so I wouldn't worry about it. Your doc knows your pregnant so she won't do anything to harm it

  • I've had it done without being pregnant, and while it seems pretty invasive it's really not. They wouldn't recommend something that would be catastrophic to your pregnancy, and if they did they have to tell you all the precautions up front etc, and you can always decline that treatment. I would tell them your concerns and see if they can set your mind at ease. What is the exact procedure they are doing? I've had biopsies, a conization and a leep, so I'm pretty well versed in what to prep you for on your end.
  • My pap was abnormal so they want to do a biopsy, they said it was hpv but they want to know what kind of strand it is, so I'm guessing there going to do the punch biopsy? The one where they take a peice of your cervix, but that s what holds the baby, can't that cause a miscarriage?
  • Your cervix closes up pretty tightly when your pregnant. When they took my biopsies (it was 3) they took such a minimal amount that I doubt it would affect anything baby wise. They're going to tell you to take it easy for the next day or so probably, but you really only have to expect some minor bleeding and they don't even have to stitch or anything, they just put this stuff that looks like Dijon mustard on it and send you home. I'd just ask them to be sure you're comfortable with what's about to happen. If you really are concerned after talking to them, I'd ask if it's a big deal to wait until after you give birth.

They should be able to tell what type of HPV from the pap. My dr could also tell from the pap that my cells were normal.

  • I have had this done before I got pregnant. They just did a repap a few days ago. I told them that if a biopsy was needed they would have to wait until after delivery. The doctor told me they would probably wait until after I deliver to do the procedure if it were needed bc there is a chance it could pose a risk to the baby. However, he said if it must be done they would wait until I'm at least 28 weeks.
  • Unless it looks like cancer, I would postpone the biopsy until after delivery. I would let them do the colposcopy and look at my cervix, but would not allow them to do any biopsies.

  • I also had an abnormal pap literally two weeks before I found out I was preg and they said they can still do it it's not a risk because baby isn't near the cervix it's attached to your uterus wall higher up, but I also did not feel comfortable with the idea of even doing it. I talked to them about it and they can't do any kind of treatments on you anyway even if there is something going on or wrong your pregnant so you can't have anything done. So there's almost no point in putting yourself through that kind of stress.
  • How can they tell if it's cancer?
  • Will the colposcopy show any abnormal cells?
  • Resurrecting this tread because I just had this done today and they found abnormal cells. My comment above said my cells were normal and today i find out slight abnormalies. So after my freak out stage, I thought I'd see how yours went. Hope it went well @annamiga21

I know that this is a frightening scenario ladies. 2 weeks after a pap I was scheduled to go back in at 20 weeks (3 days before my anatomy scan) to have this procedure done. My midwife did the colposcopy which involved( putting a vinegar solution on the cervix and using a special microscope to detect any changes once the solution was applied. While she did find traces of hpv, there was not significant changes to the cells for anything further to happen. She also informed me that they would not perform the biopsy when I was pregnant but they would more than likely do one after I had the baby. I believe that you have the right to wait. As far as I understood there is no rush (especially during pregnancy) because in the off chance that you are developing cervical cancer, it is a very slow progressing cancer and they would not treat you till after pregnancy. I believe their biggest concern is that with all the changes happening to your growing uterus changes in cells could potentially happen and they want to be able to monitor it. Sorry this is so long, I just had a personal freak out when going through this and called and spoke with the head nurse till they gavr me the answers I needed. Which you should be able to do as well if you are concerned your office will take a biopsy. Best wishes!

I had this done just before I got my BFP, and honestly, I would put it off until after birth if possible. If your doctor really wants to do it now, I'm sure it would be fine- however, just a warning, when I had mine, they told me I may bleed lightly for a few days...and I bled pretty heavily for about 2 weeks. On the slight chance that the results are not good, any treatment they give you would likely have to wait until after baby anyways.

Sidenote- my doctor reassured me at the time that abnormal paps are usually nothing. The tests they run are super sensitive, so they pick up a lot of false abnormals. She ended up being right- my biopsy came back normal, and chances are good yours will too!

    Edited: grammar is hard.
