37 weeks and cervix closed!

This is my 2nd pregnancy and with my 1st I was dialeted a bit at 34 weeks and nothing is happening this time around.
I picked up some Evening Primrose Oil supplements today and thought I would give them a try. I did some reading on it first and some say it works and other websites say "nothing has been proven" for cervixal ripening.
Anyone out there try this before... does it work or is it a gimic?

  • Loading the player...
  • I would say at 37 weeks that's a good thing. At my 40 week appointment with our first daughter I was closed and I had her the next day.
  • My Dr is inducing me in 2 weeks and I know that induction works faverably when your cervix is thin etc... Anywho I find it stange that with my first I started dialating early and my water broke at 40 weeks... but this time I did reading to prep mmy body to start natural induction and this oil came up. Just thought I would ask to see if anyone tried it before
  • I don't know about EPO, but you're 37 weeks, which means you easily have up to 5 more weeks of pregnancy. As a mom who has had 2 induced labors, and 2 that were completely intervention free, I can tell you that your body knows what it is doing, and you should let it. Don't interfere. I became impatient too, which led to my consent for the inductions. Ugh. I wish I would not have done either of them. I know you're feeling like you're sleeping on a watermelon, but it's temporary I promise. You won't be pregnant forever.
  • I'm also at 37 weeks and will be induced at 39 weeks due to high blood pressure. My doctor suggested EPO to ripen the cervix and to have lots of sex. She said it would help things during the induction if I was already dilated to a 1 or 2. I bought some EPO today... I'm still not sure if I'll use it though.

Thank you for your response! Sounds like we are in the same boat.... not sure if EPO will help either, but I guess its worth a try. I have read that women actually insert it into their vagina's, not sure how I feel about trying that or if that makes more of a difference than taking it orally.
  • My doctor actually told me to insert in my vagina! I thought she was nuts... Then I told my husband about it and he can't wrap his head around that lol I think that's the part in struggling with. I may just take it orally and have lots of sex and just let nature run its course!
  • I am glad you have the sex thing going for you to help the process lol my husband and I agree at this point its awful and not good for either of us. hahha
Well best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy!!!
  • I think u and I are in the same boat. With my first I dialated early, had no BH or contractions that I could feel. Water broke at exactly 39wks as I was getting ready for work.

with this one... he has been way low all the time, but my cervix has been like a steel trap. I was at 3cm at 39+ and having contractions but nothing was happening. My lo is measuring big and I was diagnosed w/ gd so they will induce Tues.

Hoping for a natural birth in birth center and avoid pitocin, I started Primrose Oil at 39wks. I feel like it helped a little, midwife swept membranes two days ago and said it felt softer and that I was 4 cm dialated? Is it b/c of Primrose Oil or just the way labor is progressing? dunno, but I will continue to take it.

I have been having contractions for 3 days straight now, but still not intense enough or close enough toghther to go to birth center. Water still intact. oh how different two pregnancies can be.
  • @sumtyler IT's supposed to go in your hoohaa! you puncture the oil capsule and shove it up there! the oil on the cervix itself is what does the ripening.

This is my first pregnancy, but my doctor thought I'd make it to "approximately" 37 weeks due to my short cervix. At my first exam, 36 weeks, I was 50% effaced and 0 dilation. She said to start using Evening Primrose Oil, 2 orally at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 2 vaginally at bedtime. At my 37 week appointment, nothing had changed at all! At my 38 week appointment yesterday, I had only effaced to 70%, still 0 dilation, but baby was low. (I was convinced more was happening because I'd already passed my mucous plug, but I was wrong.) She's told me to still continue using the EPO. She said she suggests EPO to her patients because she does believe it helps to soften the cervix, even if it isn't immediate, it will help when your body does go into labor. It obviously isn't working for me yet, because I know baby will come when she's ready, but I do hope it helps during labor like my doctor says.

  • I vote for lots of sex and walking!

It worked for my last birth.
  • My cervix was closed at my final dr appt...which was about 48 hours before I was in active labor naturally. This means nothing and is not a concern.
  • This is my situation too. Let me know if it works!

Anywho, I find it strange that you can't be bothered to look up the correct spelling for dilating. You've spelled it like 3 different ways...none of which are correct.

I wouldn't start taking ANY kind of supplement at 37 weeks without talking to a doctor first. If your doctor thought it was necessary for your induction, s/he would have prescribed it.
