October 2015 Moms

is anyone else having a problem with fevers?

I'm a FTM and I have talked to a few other moms who haven't had this problem, but everyone is different. This is the second time I've run a high fever (100-101) and its been sticking for a couple days, last time it stayed for a few weeks and I had a trip to the ER just for them to make me sick and me and my baby uncomfortable so they could tell us to keep taking Tylenol. I just wanted to see if anyone else is having this problem and how they're dealing with it if so.

Re: is anyone else having a problem with fevers?

  • This hasn't happened to me but I haven't taken my temp..I haven't felt like I've needed to. I would call you doctor and ask if it's normal (if you haven't already). Good luck!

I don't think I've actually been running a fever but sometimes I feel like I have been. Have you called your doctor and asked about it? Mine says to call if you have one around that temp for more than a day. I know you said you went to the ER but I don't know if you made that decision or that's what your doctor told you to do.
  • Do you know what your body's base temp is? My temp has been a 2 degrees or so higher consistently since being pregnant, but my base temp tends to be around 96.4 which is lower than most so the elevated temp brings me up to the "average" temp. Maybe your body is doing something similar but you started with a "normal" base temp?
  • The couple times I did have a fever one was before I knew I was pregnant, I was taking my typical fever reducer which wasn't the safest option, but luckily no harm because I got my fever under control quickly, then any remaining "ickiness" that stayed turned out to be pregnancy related symptoms.
The second time I got sick I just suddenly had chills one night, which usually happens to me for my first allergy flare up for the summer. I was really scared already for when it was going to happen because I always get a high fever at least once near 104. The tylenol alone wasn't that great for keeping my fever as low as would have made me feel better, but it was low enough. I kind of got on a schedule to also take benadryl between just so I didn't have a fever spike, it at least made me feel like I was trying all possibilities.

I called my office after 3-4 days of trying and they said it really wasn't a problem as long as you are at least staying hydrated and don't have signs of infection, but I really thought since all I could do was drink a small amount of water without getting sick I was going to end up in the ER. As a last effort I had my husband go get me gatorade since I knew the first thing from research they'd do if I went to the ER was check my electrolytes. I almost finished one of the larger 2 serving bottles the first day, the next day I had that and another and FINALLY was feeling better.

I haven't had any problems since, and I believe some of that is making sure I stay properly hydrated. I can't seem to drink enough water all the time because it gets boring, so I switch it up with g2 gatorade and finally tried a b6 supplement too, along with that try to eat bananas often. If you get heartburn or anything close to stomach upset often that for sure can not help if you feel feverish at all.
  • Getting persistent fevers is something you want to get checked out. Not really a normal thing outside of having a virus or infection. Call your docs office and demand to have some blood work done. You don't want to raise the core temp of the body for too long aside from what is expected in pregnancy. That is why they wanted you to keep taking Tylenol. They need to rule out an infection if you keep getting a fever. Wishing you and baby best of luck and feel better;)
  • I called my doctor again today and he just keeps saying to stay hydrated and take the Tylenol, I have no clue what my base temperature is. We try keeping tabs on it and drinking lots of Gatorade and water, I haven't seen any signs of an infection but I don't know. I'm calling again tomorrow morning to get tested for infections, on the brighter side of things my son is still sleeping and moving around as normal! Thank you all for your help!
