Is a 3d ultrasound a bad idea when not finding out gender?

I'm considering getting a 3d ultrasound so I can have some really neat pictures of the baby. We didn't find out the sex of our baby because we love surprises! My question is, did anyone else who isn't finding out get the 3d pictures and video? I'm just nervous we'll see or the tech will slip up or something. We REALLY don't wanna know and this is our first baby.

Thanks!

  • I know someone who had one and didn't find out the gender. They actually had them write the gender down to have a cake made for a gender reveal party. It worked out for her.
  • I think it will be fine, just tell the tech you don't want to know gender.
  • You just have to tell the tech you don't want to know the gender. They will mainly focus on getting facial pictures
  • Def just tell the tech. We didn't see our little man's money shot at the anatomy scan since we were finding out with a cake reveal so at our elective at 27 weeks we asked the tech to make sure they were right at 18 weeks. So she specifically checked for us. But other than that, she was mostly focused on his face and hands, with some heart and kidney shots just to make sure all was well. They will be sure to have you look away if they are in the vicinity or avoid that area all together. You gotta do it, it was the coolest thing ever!!

Just keep reiterating that you don't want to know the sex. A keepsake place will try to avoid any potty shots. Go do it and have fun!

  • With DD 1 I had a 3rd ultrasound and did not find out the gender. Great advice given above to just let the tech know your wishes.
  • I know baby O is a girl and have been to 2 ultrasounds since. I keep looking for it and I still can't see it, and that's with them showing me what to look for! I thought I was a good observer, but I wasn't. You'll probably be ok.
  • As long as you voice your thoughts. My tech got so excited when we didn't want to know because there was so much else to look at. Fingers, toes, eyes, ears, ect. There are a lot of things to get amazing shots of in a 3D ultrasound all the while completely avoiding gender reveal.

My only recommendation is to start off by looking away. You don't know what the first look is going to be and it'd be a shame for baby to be wide open on the first look. So have the tech make sure baby is in a good position then open your eyes.
  • I just had my 3D ultrasound done last week and they really just showed us the face. They mainly concentrated on getting a nice picture of the baby's face. He did ask me if I knew the sex. I'm pretty sure if you tell him you don't wanna know the sex he's not gonna look for it.
