Any designers in the house?

I am starting to work on my baby girls nursery. I know I want something simple and functional. So far, I bought a wall decal, crib and dresser. Next step is bedding and then decor. I am leaning towards gray, pink and Aqua vs teal as my colors. My question is, do I have to include Aqua/teal in the bedding to tie it all in or is it ok to keep the bedding pink and gray and bring in the Aqua as a pop of color in the room? I feel like a pop of Aqua would be good, but a co-worker basically said that my idea is terrible and really shook my confidence. I am not good at decorating. Also, I really like the chair attached, but I am not sure whether I should get it in gray or Aqua. I also attached a picture of the bedding I really like. Thanks for the help! I am trying to enjoy the process and not stress too much :)

I have attached the decal and crib I picked, the chair I am considering and two different bedding sets (and I will not be using bumpers).

Re: Any designers in the house?

  • I think adding aqua elsewhere would be fine! My personal choice would be to go with gray in the glider - it's larger and could be reused more easily in a neutral color. And I prefer the 1st bedding, with chandelier in photo. Maybe you can find a pillow (or fabric to cover a pillow) that has the aqua and pink in it for the glider, then aqua and pink accents around the room. I would try to have one thing with both the aqua and pink together to tie it all in, like the pillow, or a blanket/quilt folded over crib or chair, frame on wall, etc.

  • Thanks. I actually like the 1st bedding better too. My co worker just made me feel so crappy about it... And it really got to me (I'm gonna blame it on the hormones). I really like your suggestions :)

I have attached the gray chair - I think it is cute.
  • I agree, chair in gray, with an accent pillow. Don't let your coworker get to you! It's your baby's nursery, not hers.
  • Hi :) I am not an interior designer, but a graphic designer.
Actually, I think there is an ID on the board, I've seen her posts.

I really like both of your bedding choices. Could do the bedding for the first (Summer Infant) and the blanket from the second? (Pottery Barn)
I like having a pop of aqua in the blanket; or maybe you could get some decorative aqua pillows, an aqua changing pad cover, etc.

Don't listen to your stupid co-worker. I hate people like that, who love to burst other people's bubbles. You seem to have good taste :)
  • I am an interior designer :) My taste in color is very neutral for the main pieces. I think pops of color are perfect in accent pillows and little accents. That way, the furniture itself is more timeless and you can always redecorate for next baby by a simple switch out of accessories!
  • I am all about neutral larger pieces (white, gray, natural wood). I am adding color to the room through the area rug and wall art. I bought an upholstered rocker/glider in a dark gray color that can be used in other rooms. It is actually a room that any age could enjoy and that the baby can grow with. It is so fun!
  • Thank you so much! I feel much better about the room. My co-worker definitely got to me... I just bought the first bedding (summer infant) and the chair. Im gonna start looking for Aqua accessories. I am also working on a crochet blanket right now that is white, pink and gray. I will put a nice decorative Aqua blanket once I can find the right yarn.

    Thanks again for your suggestions!
  • I'm a designer... I think you have a beautiful start already! I love either bedding choice really but I think with the dark gray of your crib (It looks gray to me on my work computer) the bedding with the aqua in it would look beautiful. The first bedding set, while beautiful, is more of a cool gray and I guess I'd have to see it against the dark gray of the crib. But if you like the pink/gray bedding set then go for it because it is stunning and you probably aren't decorating a room for a magazine photo shoot but for you and baby! I think pops of aqua with that would be perfect. As for the glider I would stick with the gray that way you can use it down the line in another room or even resell it and it's more of a universal neutral that way. What color walls?

  • Here is a picture of the walls with the tree decal (minus flowers... We have t gotten there yet). The walls actually look lighter in person. I would of liked to paint them, but ultimately, we decided against it.

I have also been looking for more crib sheet and I found once in white and Aqua that I think would work nicely. I am also eye balling a side table, but I am not ready to commit until the rest of the furniture is in place.

And you are right, while I would like a magazine type room, it would stay like that for a second. It has to be functional and a place I will enjoy spending time in.
  • Walls are a great neutral! That way you can add more pops of color without it being overwhelming and again it will grow with your little one. I hope you share the room when you are done. You are doing a great job!

  • I work in product development currently on apparel but have been in many product categories. Neutral walls def a must. If you plan to have other kids you want it to be versatile. Plus grey is very in right now. If you plan to have pink beddinG of sort I would not get the real chair. Too much. Do Grey. And while you don't need bedding to pull it all together you do need something with all the colors. Whether it be a simple
Picture on the wall, pillow or throw blanket.
  • Meant no teal chair ;-p agree with neutral larger pieces. Colored accent pieces would be fine. I could see cute owls Being a nice touch in this color scheme somewhere.
  • Another designer here! I love that wall color! And I have to agree with the other posters. Use the aqua as your accent color for a little interest. The pink and gray make for a great, soft color palette.
  • Thank you for all the comments! I shouldn't listen to my co-worker! And let silly things like others opinions stress me out so much.
  • (Web Designer here) Feel free to make the aqua the color pop in the room. That's what I'm doing with baby blue in mine. My safari theme is predominately shades of brown with pops of baby blue. It draws the eye and makes it less overwhelming.
