Hi mommies. I'm 20 weeks and 5 days and learned two weeks ago that I have a short cervix. It's now measuring at 1.4 cm but my MFM doc won't do a cerclage unless it shortens to 1 cm. does anyone have experience with a cerclage or a short cervix?
I don't have experience with it but get put on modified bed rest with every pregnancy. I highly recommend the high risk board. There are several posts like this that can help you.
There is a window of time where they will do a preventative cerclage and you are passed that window. The next option may be progesterone supplements which have been shown to help. Bedrest is also an option, but this has less evidence to support how effective it is. If your cervix gets too short (as you mentioned ~1cm), they may try a "rescue cerclage." I have a short cervix as well and get it checked every 2 weeks by MFM. I haven't had a cerclage, but have done a lot of research. I would try to get as much info as you can about options from your doctor. Each circumstance and reason for shortening is different.
Hi and welcome to the short cervix club! Mine has been under 2.5cm since 15 weeks and my perinatologist also will hold off on cerclage until that 1cm mark as it can be a rather risky procedure. Also cervixes can be dynamic and grow and shorten with something as simple as emptying your bladder. I went on progesterone suppositories around 16 weeks and they seem to be helping to hold my cervix steady. Has your doc discussed this option with you? They're pretty gross and messy but hey, anything is better than getting stitches in my cervix IMO. Did your OB mention any funneling? If not that's a good sign - sometimes your cervix can just be short and not incompetent! Just keep getting monitored every week as you're nearing the end of the "cerclage window"..I believe they can perform one up to 24 wks. Best of luck to you!
Thanks so much everyone. I am currently taking 200 mg of progesterone nightly by inserting a pill into my vagina. I am being checked every week and am 21 weeks today, so I have three weeks left before a cerclage is an option. I am glad to hear that other doctors are waiting for the 1 cm mark also because I know doctors differ in their opinions. Some will give you a cerclage at 1.5.
