Tuna

What is everyone's opinion on tuna?  I have done some research and the articles are just totally confusing.  They say no in one paragraph, then its refuted by experts in the next one saying to eat it in moderation for the fatty acids. I had some at a meeting at work today, so now I am feeling a little guilty.  Also, I went to my doc yesterday and she gave me a list of the no no foods, and I was surprised to see lunch meat was not on it. Only bologna was.  Its so crazy how everywhere you go, things are different.  Sooooo do we eat lunch meat and tuna or noway!

My doctor said no albacore tuna and in moderation is fine - I eat it maybe once a week. 6-12 oz a week is fine.

  • 6 oz per week of canned tuna is fine.

  • And this is without cooking or anything, right? Because I love me some tuna sandwiches and haven't had any since I found out just in case.
  • I've had it a few times since becoming pregnant. I try to limit all my fish in take to once a week when I'm pregnancy because of the mercury. That's just what I feel comfortable with... No sure on the actual "rules". I'm a "everything in moderation" type...
  • I am so so glad u asked this question. I want to eat tuna salad so so bad !!! When they say no albacore is that what's used in restaurants and delis salads?

  • Tuna is fine as long as it's not raw. Tuna salad is fine. Dr just says limit it to two servings a week.
  • Albacore is fine. It's yellowfin you want to avoid due to high mercury.

  • I had 2 tuna fish sandwiches yesterday (2 cans) before I remembered you're only suppose to have a one a week. But you should be fine :)
  • From what I've know (and other posters have already said) one can of tuna fish per week is absolutely fine. What you want to avoid is tuna steaks, like what you might get if you order Ahi because the portion size is so much larger, and you're eating essentially unprocessed muscle, where the mercury is stored so the Mercury content per serving is much higher.

Many people are concerned about mercury levels in all seafood, but tuna absorb mercury in the ocean at a "moderate level." I've attached a chart that ranks fish on their Mercury content (if it's too tiny you can easily google "seafood and Mercury content.") As long as you limit the "moderate" ones to less than once a week, avoid the "high" and "extremely high" ones altogether, you should be A-okay!
  • Thanks for asking this! I've been wanting a tuna sandwich so bad!

Ya know, I always thought Tuna was okay...I've even had it raw since becoming pregnant (crazyyyy)...but, I live in LA on the Pacific Coast and have been researching the nuclear fall out in Fukushima (I surf and am in the ocean a lot) and have read a lot of recent studies about Tuna and their highly migratory lifestyle. Most wild caught Tuna we eat will have been in Japan near the fall out at least once in their life. And since there hasn't been any "progress" with the leaking nuclear waste into the ocean, I wonder how that could ultimately affect us down the line? I hate conspiracy theories but unfortunately that fall out is real..... just something to think about :-/
  • My dad just got back from a fishing trip to Mexico where he caught a ton of fish. So...it's fish tacos for dinner at my parents house tonight. We're all really big fish eaters, and if I don't partake, I'm going to get the side-eye (no one in my family knows I'm pregnant yet, besides one sister). I know he caught a bunch of yellow fin, which is on the "high-mercury" list. Hopefully there will be other options, or else I'm going with a fis-less taco. I know it's just me being paranoid, but whatever. I'll still refrain!
  •  I saw this article a few weeks back and have been avoiding canned tuna ever since but of course I want a tuna sandwhich sooooo bad.

My doctor told me no canned tuna at all. Limit fish to 3 times a week and if I want lunch meat it has to be heated.
  • My mom watches Dr. Oz and according to him, skipjack tuna has the lowest amount of mercury because it's a smaller size and shorter lived.  It's supposed to be fairly easy to find in cans or pouches but I haven't looked for it yet myself.

  • Kimberlyain eeeek! I totally made a tuna sandwich today for lunch. First time since pregnant. I have been craving it, and reading on this thread that most women said a small amount is not so bad, I decided to have it today. I guess it was the first and last sandwich!

  • I feel like eating lunch meat or tuna (or any seafood) is okay in moderation, but we should not be eating it every day. Raw foods in general make me nervous.
  • With DD I craved tuna melts every DAY. My Ob said 1-2 sandwiches a week was fine. DD is 18 months and fine so far!

At my last appointment, where they told me no lunch meat, they also said no tuna. They told me they used to say tuna in moderation was ok, but they no longer recommend that.
Anything that's being told to me at appointments I'm following, more so than what I read in articles. Many articles are merely opinions, and it's hard to figure out what's good info and what's not.

I was told exactly the same.
  • My OB recommended tuna 2x a week because of my meat aversion... It is high in protein.
  • My ob told me 6oz of canned tuna a week, absolutely no albacore. No deli meat until it is cooked beyond recognition. Meats like turkey and ham you are buying from the deli is fine, prepackaged stuff is no bueno at all. Canned tuna isn't the same as tuna steaks or raw tuna.
  • Try to remember that some of the advice from our doctors is to combat worst case scenarios and, not to sound bad, but they want to cover all of their bases. Ob's are sued at really high rates so a lot of them tend to take an overly cautious approach. Its like when drug companies list allllll the possible side effects of a medicine because 1 person in the stufy experienced them. Deli meat is a no-no because of potential bacteria growth, as is raw sushi. Heating it kills anything that *might* be there. If you've never had a problem before, you're probably not going to have a problem now. Would I buy a salmon roll from my local 7-11 and chow down? Absolutely not, but the sushi restaurant I've been going to for years will certainly see me (in fact... probably tomorrow. Now that I'm thinking about it I totally want it). I wouldn't buy a premade deli sandwich either, but I would use fresh cold cuts that I bought from the grocery store. During my last pregnancy there was a woman who swore up and down that you absolutely could not have soft serve ice cream because what if they didn't properly clean the machine out? I'm sorry, but there's no way I'm giving up soft serve, and i can't live my life constantly worried about things like that. I can understand taking some obvious precautions and making some changes, but try to relax and follow your instincts!
  • Pre pregnancy all I ate was tuna, it's my favorite sandwich. Talked to doc and she said stick to the really cheep stuff (less mercury) but in reality you would have to eat it in extreme amounts for it to effect anything.

And my doc also thinks the lunch meat rule is dumb because the last out breaks of lysteria were in hummus and grapefruit and no one's saying not to eat those.
  • Every doctor will say something different, you just have to do what you're comfortable with. If you're feeling guilty over a little tuna at work, then I don't think k it's worth it to eat.

My doctor told me I can basically eat whatever I wanted as long as it didn't come out of the back of somebody's van. ( a reputable place that stores and prepares properly). He's not a stickler for food as much as he is over the counter meds.
