Is there any, ANY possible way a 13 week pregnancy could not have a HB during an u/s and then have one later? I'm thinking no, logically, but I'm supposed to have my D&C this week and I can't shake this nagging feeling that I want to insist on another u/s just to be sure. I'm being ridiculous, right? I just feel all panicky about going through with the D&C when the ultrasound showed a perfectly formed 13w1d baby, measuring correct to the day, but missing a heartbeat. I think this is probably just the denial stage of grief.

I would think it should be pretty easy to pick up the heartbeat that far along. If you are uneasy however, I would get another or possibly have blood draws to check your levels. I had a week of denial my hormones going down and seeing it on paper made it real for me. Everyone is different and needs different kinds of proof to be able to accept this kind of thing. Demand whatever you need from your doctor and don't do anything until you are comfortable. T&P so sorry you are going through this.

I think, logically, no. However, machines and humans are not error proof, so I would ask for another ultrasound for peace of mind. If your doctor has a problem with another ultrasound, I would be looking for a new doctor. I hope your procedure goes well.

I would think no, sorry. But if you really need to, ask for another US. If baby is ok, he/she would have a hb and be moving on the screen. I hope thigns work out well for you.

I know they did an U/S before my D&C, while I was already alseep. So I would just express your concern to the doctor before the procedure.

Logically, no. I'm so sorry. I had the same fears when I was 8 weeks with no heartbeat so I requested another ultrasound to which the doctor obliged me without a word.

I asked my doctor if I should get another u/s to confirm and he said it wasn't necessary, but he would do it for my peace of mind if I wanted. Mine was measuring behind at the first u/s and I was already fearing the worst when I went to the second one and found out it hadn't grown and there was no longer a heartbeat. My heart didn't want to believe it, but my mind knew it was true, so I decided not to get another u/s before the d&c.

Your case is a little different, so if you think you might worry about this later, it wouldn't hurt to get another u/s. Just to quiet that voice in your head. It's up to you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how you feel. I felt the same way. Mine was at the 12 W appt. I asked for a US right before the surgery, just wanted to triple check (tech and other ob had done an us and confirmed the loss already). They couldn't put me under until after I saw it on the screen again, so I had to be awake when they positioned me on the surgical room, it was a little scary. Nonetheless, it made me feel "better" and at peace. I know I would have wondered if I hadn't done it (probably not a logical thought).

I had a MMC in April (no HB at 11w) and asked for a second u/s because I had that same feeling. My dr was 100% supportive of my decision. If it will put your mind at ease, definitely request one. I'm so sorry you're going through this!

I know I posted on your other post but I want to let you know it's okay to ask for another ultrasound. I did when I went through this and my doctor was very understanding. It was heartbreaking but at least I knew I wouldn't be beating myself up over it with the thoughts of "what-if."

Thank you all for your replies. My D&C is scheduled for tomorrow. I talked to my doctor today and she agreed to do one more u/s right beforehand. I am honestly not expecting a different result, but I do think it will be good for my sanity to have that extra reassurance that my baby is really gone, and seeing my baby one more time will be good for closure, I think. I hardly even looked at the u/s last time because I was so hyper-focused on the lack of HB. I think seeing my baby for the last time will help me say goodbye.

Thinking of you today as well, that you got the closure you needed with your pre-op ultrasound, that they kept you very comfortable post-op and that any bleeding is short lived or light, like spotting.

I hope you get some answers soon with the testing.

Thank you all for your thoughts. My doctor gave me one last u/s and didn't make me feel bad about it at all. She said a lot of her patients request it. She was also kind enough to get me some handprints of our baby, which was very sweet of her to think of. I ended up having a D&E instead of a D&C because of the baby's size, so I'm a little more campy and bleeding a bit more than last time, but emotionally I'm doing okay. Feeling ready to move toward hopefully getting some answers and trying again soon.

They dilate you further and use a different method for extraction. Usually a combination of suction and forceps instead of a curettage, but a D&C often uses suction too. Typically D&C is done in first tri; D&E is second or third tri loss, but there are always exceptions, depending on your doctor and specific situation.
