No more boob please

My baby is just short of four months old and is strictly breast-fed up to this point. She has never had an issue with it and has been gaining weight greatly. The doctor did say at her four-month appointment we would discuss cereal. However the past three days she has started crying when I put my breast to her mouth and not taking it. It's gotten to the point where I have to pump and give her a bottle instead. Has this happened to anyone? I know it's wonderful that she is still taking a bottle of my milk but just sad that we are losing that bond. The only time she still eats from the breast is late at night when she wakes up. Could she be teething and the nipple bothers her? I know she has her appt in a week but thought I would ask here first. Thanks:)

Re: No more boob please

  • Have you tried different positions to feed her? My daughter is very easily distracted, and will do the same if there's a lot going on. I find side lying with her works well, or standing up and moving around with her. See if a bit of change works - it can be trying but I still find the bond is there! Also, my daughters feeds are less often now but fuller. I always offer her the boob first but if she's not hungry then she'll push it away. We do something else for a while and then when she's hungry she'll eat.

  • Have you given her the bottle often? My son has maybe had about 10 bottles so far, but when we switched to the medium flow because the slow flow was taking him 45 minutes, he was not nice to my breast for a day after because he liked how easy it was with the bottle. So, maybe she is getting "spoiled" with the bottle?

Also @secretbaba has a good point, my son eats every 4 hours.. my pediatrician said he will gladly eat every 3 hours, but to transition him to longer and he's been doing fine for about the last month!
For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him.

  • Thanks! I am so used to her eating every two hours maybe it's changed! I will also try the position idea, I used to switch it up all the time but then she got used to the cradle position but maybe she is ready for a change;) I don't give her a bottle usually unless I am out in public so maybe once or twice a week. Except for the past few days...I have been to get her to eat. Thanks again for the help!
  • My LO has been doing exactly that. I just keep trying and eventually she feeds. Sometimes it takes a while. I suspect she's teething, as her sister did the same when she was teething. The sucking puts pressure on the gums, causing some pain. It does get better. I am also exclusively nursing. Baby has never had a bottle, her sister exclusively nursed till 18 months. If you want to continue nursing, just keep at it; try switching sides. Good luck!

  • Hi. Coming out of lurking for this one. My little boy is 14 weeks and the same was happening to him. He cried every time I tried to breastfeed him for two days. I was pumping and bottle feeding him. And then on the third day, a little tooth was poking out. He's eating better now, but still a little uncomfortable with the teething, so I give him a cold teething chewing you before breastfeeding him. It seems to help.
  • Thanks again for all the ideas! So far so good today...just waiting longer between feeding and she seems just fine now! Yay! She has been drooling a lot so maybe teething as well...just happy she still wants to breast feed...it's our little moment:)
  • My 15week old was just doing this yesterday. I was gonna pump and try and feed her with a bottle for the first time. But then i remember seeing something about it on here. So i get on and read all of the comments again. So i was like ok, im not gonna try and give her a bottle because i dont want her to stop nursing. So i just kept trying and kept trying through all the screaming and crying. But i finally realised that she will eat when she gets hungery enough. And think god last night and this morning shes actually laching and eating. With that said i just wanted to say thank you to all the ladys on here. Because i think i would have give in and gave her a bottle if it wasnt for all of you saying that she wil get through it. (First time actually breastfeeding, my other 3 wore formula feed. And ebfing is a lot harder then wat i thought it would be.i guess it doesnt all come naturally. ) :D
