Babies on the Brain

Why do they think I'm crazy?

It's effing cold, flu and RSV season. Not to mention, Norwalk virus is very prevalent right now. I keep getting looks like I'm nuts when I ask if someone is sick or ask them to wash their hands before holding Lucas. I mean seriously people, is it really that hard to wash your hands?

  • You aren't nuts---I think that is totally reasonable!

On a side note--I haven't really been on much so CONGRATS and your baby boy is just beautiful!

  • That isn't crazy at all. You've got to protect that gorgeous little guy. A friend of mine who just had a baby wouldn't let you in the room if you didn't have a flu shot, and when you were there, you had to wear a mask.
  • We did that and Allie was in daycare and 4 months old in flu season.  I think it is the smart thing to do.  I even did it before I had children and was going to touch a child.

  • I would NEVER think to pick up anyones newborn without washing my hands first. It's a pretty simple request, really. People are kinds lazy sometimes.

     He is beautiful! Congrats!

  • Sounds like those people are morons.  Luckily, people I know seem to have common sense about this without me having to tell them.
  • I agree - not crazy at all!?

    He is so adorable!?

  • They are the nuts!  Everyone with a newborn should ask the same question.
  • Ditto everyone else - they are the crazy ones.  I don't even think about holding a newborn without washing my hands.

  • You're not nuts but my DH sure was when DD was born.  The first time we took her to church he bought an industrial size thing of hand sanitizer and before he would even let anyone get close to her he was squirting it in their hands.  It was hilarious!
  • Not crazy at all. We will be doing this when DS is born in the spring.
  • I thought it was common practice to wash your hands before holding a new born.
  • Not crazy at all. It's common sense!

  • With a preemie, I didn't hardly let anyone come over to my house when I brought my son home.  Only family saw him and I made them wash their hands and use antibacterial hand soap.  With RSV season, you can never be to careful!
  • You are not crazy at all!  I will probably ask people to do this anyways...even if they aren't sick.  I am SURE I will get crap from my mom.  She isn't even willing to take off her dirty shoes in our house.  I am not sure she will be willing to wash her hands also.

  • Anytime anyone, even my boss, walks into my office I have their wash them hands, unless they promise not to touch anything.

I'm CRAZY, you are perfectly reasonable!

  • You're being perfectly reasonable! ?we went through the same thing with DS last Christmas he was 4 days old and we refused to bring him to my in-laws because a sister-in-law was battling the flu and she was going to be there.

That's just plain old good common sense!?

  • I am so cautious about people touching Colin that I would flip a lid if they acted like I was putting them out when I ask them to wash their hands.

Luckily, my mom and MIL are both nurses so they help with the "reminding" when they are around.
