Zofran?

I know there is a lot out there online about how bad this stuff is - or how it causes birth defects, etc.  BUT - my Dr. just offered it to me for my insane nausea.  I have read MANY different things - some good, some bad.
Just looking for any input from others that have used it or are using it....(I read all the studies, so no need to refer me to any links about how bad it is..just looking to hear from experienced users) :)

Thanks!

Re: Zofran?

  • I've been using it.  This pregnancy I'm having way worse morning sickness than my last two and now I have two little boys to take care of while I'm puking!  I don't take it every day but there are some days that I can't get through without it.  I'm just trusting my doctor on this one.

  • I used Zofran the whole first tri with my son. He was fine, my doc said she didn't believe the hype around the lawsuit (I've done some reading and don't really either). She offered it to me if Diclegis didn't work for me.

  • I heard that a recent study linked it to birth defects in babies, but I took it daily with my first pregnancy and everything was fine. I have had some pretty nasty nausea with this pregnancy, but I've been able to manage without asking for any Zofran this go around.

  • I used it with my last one, but my OB won't prescribe it anymore because of lawyers. She says she doesn't think there is any link, but you can't be too careful with lawyers as no body in her office wants to be sued.

  • I used it with my last pregnancy. I was offered it this time but opted not to only because it didn't help.

  • My doc prescribed it yesterday. My extreme nausea was really affecting my work. I had to have some relief. It's like a night and day difference. I know many women who have taken it through a lot of their pregnancy but just in case I'm sticking with taking it sparingly, whenever it's so bad it affects my concentration.

  • My SIL used it for both her previous pregnancies (one was stillborn at 36 weeks due to knot in UC).  Now our doctors (we use the same office) won't even prescribe it.  I'd feel better knowing that I'm not taking something that has potentially negative effects on the baby whether they are true or not.  I personally couldn't live with that decision if something were to go wrong.

  • I used it pretty much daily from weeks 8-12 last time & my son is fine. I took one 4 mg tablet/day. As with all medications, I think your risk of side effects likely increase with dosage and frequency. I've taken it a few times this pregnancy. I'm an educated health care provider and don't believe the hoopla around those studies either. I try to take it sparingly because of the awful constipation it causes!

I am not taking it this time bc even though my doc doesn't believe there is a link, they don't want to leave themselves open to lawsuits. However, I took it in all three of my previous pregnancies. I actually took it the least with my first and she was born with a heart defect. Took it daily with my second for almost six months and she is completely healthy.

If you doc thinks it's fine I would take it. I mean technically Tylenol is a category C and most of us take that. Hope you feel better soon.

This too. It didn't really seem like it did that much for me last time.

  • I take the max 8mg of Zofran every 8 hours with Diclegis at bed time. I took 8mg of Zofran every 8 hours my entire pregnancy when I was pregnant with my.daughter. I have a family history of birth defects, but my daughter has none. I don't believe most of the bad news about Zofran because my child should have had a birth defect just from the fact I have a birth defect and a family history of birth defects and she didn't. Also a lot of people don't want to look at the statistics of birth defects and would rather blame someone or something else.
  • I'm honestly hoping to take it this time.... I'm barely making it through the days and I'm pretty sure my dd is getting sick of watching tv and watching me lay down looking green!

    My appt is next week
  • My midwife said Zofran is better for preventing vomiting than nausea. She said Diclegis is better for nausea. I did take Zofran once during this pregnancy and it didn't help my nausea that much.

  • I tried it during my first pregnancy, but it was much less effective than unisom and made me VERY constipated. Be warned! ;)

  • I was horribly sick with my first the whole pregnancy. Zofran saved my life and helped me be able to get out of bed every morning lol. My son is as healthy as can be!
  • I took it last pregnancy. It helped a ton and DS was huge and perfect. I haven't researched it much in light of recent news because I'm not as sick this time.

  • My doc didn't even give me the option. I've heard of all the lawsuits too and was wary of it, but I found it interesting when I went to my appt my doc just said to eat frequent snacks and try ginger And I'm sorry, it's just normal.
I was actually relieved she didn't offer zofran but it's interesting all the same

  • My doctor refuses to even give it, my first pregnancy it didn't work very well anyways so I don't mind. I took it for 2 months and my daughter was fine, but that's just one kid being fine, I probably wouldn't take it just in case. I'm on Diclegis this time and it helps.

I took Zofran with my first and she was fine. My OB this time said she thinks it's ok and would be willing to give me some if I wanted it. But she had me try Vit B6 (25mg every 6hr) and Unizom (1/2 tab every night) first-it is working great! I have gone from vomiting 5-8 times a day to about 1-3.
  • I was on zofran with DS. I had to take them ,not from morning sickness but because I needed to be on other med that made me nauseous. My DS is perfect. This te I need them for morning sickness and my doc won't prescribe them. She recommended I try ginger ale and saltine crackers or anything ginger but she wanted me to try the natural route first.
Zofran worked really well for me, however when I took it I was done for the day. I would need to be in bed or on the couch because it would knock me out.... everyone reacts differently to medications. If your doc is recommending them, it's worth trying.
  • Lucky! I have insaaaaaane nausea this pregnancy and it has kept me down most days. I went to my primary care doctor and asked for zofran and she denied me. She tried to put me on benadryl and I said I didn't want to sleep more than I already am. The benefits outweight the risks for zofran I've read if your morning sickness is unbearable. My OB gave it to me last time and it's safe according to her.

I took it with my first pregnancy and have been taking it when needed during this pregnancy. Isn't helping much due to the hyperemesis I'm dealing with. Anyone can get sued for anything ! I know a lawyer to goes to an annual conference on which they discuss new things to sue people or groups for ! So take it with a grain of salt ! We live in a sue happy nation. Id rather not take it due to the horrible constipation it causes.
