Cord Blood Banking

Is anyone doing or has anyone done the Cord blood banking before? My doctor informed me today that July is Cord Blood awareness month, and cordblood.com has a $600+ discount if you sign up this month. Just curious if anyone had any experience with this!

Re: Cord Blood Banking

  • I do not personally, but my BFF banked her first ones cord blood. It was a gift to her from her mother and included storage for I don't know how many years… Maybe a decade? In any case, she did not do it with her second because of the cost.

I'm sure that people will come on here and tell you all of the benefits of delayed cord clamping. I'm in no way an expert in this field.

However, I do know that you need to research the company that you plan to bank with and find out what their history is and how they store their blood. Is there a back up plan for emergencies? For example, do they have generators and for how long will they last? How long have they been in business? Are they located in tornado alley? There's a lot of questions that you need answers to before investing not only your money, but also your baby's cord blood. There are a few big ones and the answers to these questions should be pretty easy to find.

    Anytime sweetie. Good luck!
  • We did it for my first. She has a congenital heart defect and so we thought it would be appropriate to do it in case something was needed in the future. We did get a discount because she was/is a heart baby. If you have a friend that has done it (we did it through CBR - one of the biggest and most reputable out there), if they give you a referral code, you can get a discount for storage. It is expensive, but we felt it was worth it.

I'm not sure if we'll do it for our second if she doesn't have any obvious health issues.
  • If you don't bank, please consider donating! Cord blood saves so many lives.
  • My husband and I looked into cord banking and really considered it. Our baby thankfully hasn't presented with any defects so far. I see the perks in banking, I think it's a wonderful thing to do as a back up plan for anything that happens down the road. However I don't feel right banking it if my baby doesn't absolutely need it. You see my friend was diagnosed with leukemia at sixteen. Despite having siblings, there was no bone marrow match and the chemo wasn't working. Thankfully he was able to receive a stem cell transplant from donated cord blood. It worked for a few years and then he had to have a second transplant when he relapsed. He lived 11 years from his original diagnosis but unfortunately passed away from complications later on. The way I see it, he got to live through most of his twenties, and he never thought he'd see 21. I'm not trying to persuade anyone to donate over banking, but if you're not going to bank, like @ sleeplessinseattle said please consider donating. It really could save someone else's life.
