How does it work?

I had to go into l&d today to get checked out- I was having intense pains. I wasn't in labor so they are sending me home. I am wondering if i will be charged for this visit or is everything included in my charge when I actually deliver. I think it stinks that my doc couldn't see me in the office. :-/

Re: How does it work?

  • I know mine would bill it separate....I would assume they will do it separate for you too...

  • Mine bills separate as well.
  • You'll get a bill from the hospital

  • May I ask a personal question? Out of pure curiousity...how much would you get charged for a trip to l&d?
  • I would say it depends on your hospital and their billing policy. I received a separate bill from my hospital when I visited triage. Another doctor visited me though not my actual doctor. Did your doctor see you in labor and delivery? I'm sure you will be billed for their time separate from your doctor office visits.
  • You will be billed for every L&D visit separately. For me, I hit my deductible on the year but it's still a separate bill.

  • I got a hospital bill for going to L&D plus an additional charge from my doc. Plus a charge for each procedure that was done while I was there (I had an EKG, u/s, blood work.... All billed seperately).
  • I looked at my bill from L&D triage and the treatment room charges were about $800 and medications about $100. This was just for monitoring, a terp shot and a pill. Of course yours will be different, but it gives you something to go off of.

Hopefully if you haven't hit your deductible yet, you will once you deliver.

  • When I had a preterm scare, I think the overnight stay with monitoring, IV fluids, Terb shot was billed for close to $1000 and I had to pay $200 because I had hit my deductible and after that they cover 80% and I pay 20%. Once I had LOs I hit my max out of pocket ($3000) so the L&D trip didn't impact my out of pocket at all at the end of the year. No matter what I knew I was paying $3000.

  • Yeah @breezymeema7 how much you would pay out of pocket would completely depend on your insurance plan. It could be zero (aside from your premiums) to the full bill if you had a really high deductible. So depending on how long you were there and what tests and meds you got any where from nothing to a few grand.

I think my hospital bills $2500 for a
Vaginal birth and $3500 for a c-section. My insurance should cover 80%. No idea what they would do for an unplanned trip to L&D

  • I'll apologize now for the following comment, but man am I glad I live in Canada. All of this is free. I get no bills from the hospital if I go to the case room. I don't pay for delivery, meds, anything. The only thing I would pay for would be prescription meds if I have to take something when I'm discharged and the hospital room itself.

The U.S. is way too money hungry. It's unfair to so many people and not everyone gets good insurance, or any at all. It sucks :-q
  • Oh yikes thanks ladies. I can't believe how expensive this process is! I ended up leaving because they told me it would be hours before they were able to give me an ultrasound. They ruled out labor and said it could be an issue with my gallbladder and kidneys. So they only monitored the heart beat and contractions. :-/ hopefully it won't be too expensive!

I'm in Canada too. This pregnancy has made me so grateful for universal health care!
  • I'm sure it's separate.

Check with your insurance? Mine was included - I went in for one "this is labor, not!" and two NSTs. We never saw a hospital bill just what the insurance paid them and our co-pay.
  • Oh my goodness seriously? I am in New Zealand under a consultant obstetrician and a midwife and all of my care is free. Everything. So blessed!!!
  • It's not free!!!!! Care and money doesn't just come out of thin air. Yes you aren't getting specific bills with specific charges like I am, but you are paying taxes for healthcare that I don't.

  • My trip to L&D several weeks ago was $2,500 before insurance!! I didnt even get an IV or any meds! I had an US and they monitored baby for an hour. Im responsible for $500 of that bill. They will get payments until tax time. :)

    This!!
Nor should it be free. While I know the US healthcare system certainly has it's flaws, I don't think free healthcare is something everyone is entitled to. Doctors, nurses, the people who scrub toilets at the hospital, they don't just volunteer. These people need to get paid. Things cost money. Nothing is free.

I agree. I'm not expecting it to be free. I was just wondering how it would be billed.
  • I think we both meant the people bragging about universal healthcare. I know that you were just asking about billing. Sorry if it seemed it was directed at you.

  • I just wrote a mini essay about hospital reimbursement and US healthcare Vs Canada and England. Decided i should save it for UO because really this all makes me sick. But I will leave it with a few basic things.

Life isn't fair.... There is no such thing as a free lunch. I would never seek health care in Canada or England particularly if my life depended on it. The US is in fact spoiled maybe not with our maternity leave But in many other aspects we are.

  • For anyone to actually think healthcare is "free" anywhere on this earth is mind boggling to me. Because you don't "see a bill" means absolutely nothing! Face to palm

We actually pay out the nose for it. I love our system, but if our income tax wasn't astronomically high most of us could afford a decent plan were we in a U.S. Style system. Mind you, with all the complications I have had over my four pregnancies since 2011 I am MASSIVELY thankful for our system.

  • I will say that I don't think the quality of our health care system is quite as bad as some in the states seem to think...I have spoken to many who seem to think we are seriously in the Stone Age.

Love this! This is exactly what I think when reading posters who choose to brag about their "free healthcare" (lol at free) when someone is clearly distraught or seeking advice in regards to their particular health care costs.
