Sick mama, hungry baby!

someone's child (most likely one of my mother's) has passed their little germs onto me, and I have a cold unfortunately. But I breastfeed, exclusively. HELP! What do I do?
What medicines are safe? I don't want to get my baby girl sick.

Re: Sick mama, hungry baby!

  • I would just try to wash your hands a lot! Keep breastfeeding, and your baby will probably get your antibodies and therefore NOT get the cold :)
I think most medicines that dry up snot also may dry up milk? So personally I just suffer through it for the most part... I was really miserable one night so I had expressed milk for hubby to feed baby and I went ahead and took NyQuil to get some sleep and relief! You could check with your doctor or a lactation consultant about the meds.
I hope you feel better soon!

Try the app LactMed and you can look all the meds up there. But yes most meds to dry the snot up could also dry the milk up. Also nurse on demand to keep supply up. As well as plenty of water and I've heard Gatorade can help you make more milk.
  • Thank you so much ladies!
  • I just got over a horrible cold myself - it was awful and lasted two weeks, complete with a devastatingly sore throat, then a long lasting cough and ultimately conjunctivitis. Not being able to take cold meds was the worst. I continued to breastfeed throughout but washed my hands like a maniac and when the cough hit I wore a scarf over my face while nursing. My father also helped out one day so I could rest and minimize the amount of contact I had with LO. My hands are now raw from washing but I'm now much better and my DS has continued to be healthy. Continue breastfeeding and frequent hand washing is the best advice I can give - hope you feel better soon!
