Baby hates pacifiers

My daughter is 8 wks old and we've been trying to give her a pacifier for a few weeks now but had no luck. We bought all sorts of different kinds, tried them when she's happy and grumpy but she just spits them out or sometimes starts to scream. She's started pacifying more at the breast recently and sucking on her thumb but I'm worried about thumb sucking being a problem as she gets older, (because I can't take it away). Any advice or does she just hate pacies and I should give up?

Re: Baby hates pacifiers

  • I wouldn't try to force it on her if she doesn't like it. Pacifiers aren't too easy to take away once they're hooked either.

  • Have you tried MAM brand? Ours hated all pacis, and she still won't always take the MAM, but she will take it about 7/10 times. I don't understand it but everyone always says their picky babies take them... and they were right!
  • I don't see a reason to push it. My first two never took them (nor did they take bottles.) Baby 3 takes bottles and accepts a paci for a few minutes a few times a week but mostly isn't interested.

And if you are worried about having to break a habit, then why push it? There's a reason toddlers have pacifiers...because it can be a hard habit to break.

  • The benefit of the thumb is that you don't have to find it while driving. Your LO can. ;)
Both the thumb and pacifier are hard to break. I would do what works for your family and baby!

  • My LO doesn't really care for them either. It seems his logic is, "Why have this plastic thing when you have a breast?" If he's really tired and absolutely not hungry he'll take it. I don't really have any advice though. Sorry. Just wanted to commiserate.
  • My LO won't take a paci either. My mom can get him to latch onto a gumdrop paci but she has to hold it in his mouth. I have no time for that so I let him find his thumb. And personally, it's the cutest sight ever. Both are difficult habits to break so just do what works. My LO will wake up at night and now he finds his thumb (or entire fist) and falls back to sleep :) I know he sleeps on his belly and that's a risk, but again...whatever you're comfortable with and whatever works.
  • My older son hated pacifiers. The baby may take it for a couple of minutes but that is a bout it. Some babies are just not into it. Don't force it. At least you won't have to deal with it later on.

  • I've tried mams, soothies, and nuks and DD2 hates them all. DD1 loved her paci from the beginning, so it was always easy to soothe her... DD2 not so much! I feel ya!

Same here, he'll take it and grimace and spit it out. A couple times he's really latched on and held it in. But I have no time to sit there holding it in or try to find it in the dark or car. I'd rather just give him the boob when I can and forget about the rest.
  • My DD won't take them either- I thought I was alone with this!
  • My DD wouldn't take one until I got a smaller one-- 0-2 month sized. The other paci's were too big for her. She only takes it sometimes but it's better than never!
