did you even have the sashimi???????????
  • Ditto. Had sushi a couple of weeks ago. It was a craving. It was awesome. I lived.

I did!  The salmon made me gag a little this time, which is odd (pregnancy, go figure), but the white fish and tuna were as yummy as ever.  We mostly stuck to rolls, though, because filling up on sashimi would be kind of pricey at the place we go.

  • There are tons of rolls that use only cooked meat. Anything with shellfish is cooked. And if it's a trusted source you should be able to eat any of it. But if you're nervous (like me) stick to crab and shrimp and you'll be fine, that's all cooked.

  • They have vegetarian options at most sushi places! That's how I get my fix without the worry.
  • I'm 1000% craving some tuna and salmon sashimi, directly to the face. I feel KINDA bad that I was so strict with "eat this, not that" when I first got preg, but as this progresses (I'm 14+2), I'm definitely a little looser. Of course no alcohol or anything, but I had a deli sandwich last week, and steal the occasional raw sushi off my husband's plate while I'm eating avocado and cucumber rolls. Is it terrible that I'm looking forward to jury duty on Monday for the sole reason that there is a great sushi restaurant a block away from the courthouse?
  • Even if you eat the cooked rolls, they still cut them with the knives they use to cut the raw ones.  So you're not really being much safer.

  • I eat sushi... All the sushi! I'm craving it right now, so I think I'll surprise my hubby with a trip to our fav spot. Spicy tuna hand roll with avo... Screaming O... Salmon... Mexico City. I've been following this chef for over 10 years, I trust (love!) him.
  • EAT ITTTTTTTTTT! If I didn't find fish repulsive right now (probably because I normally eat way too much) I would be RIGHT there with you girl!!

If you're not feeling the raw fish (which again, I say go for it) there are plenty of cooked options.

I've been having sushi a few times a week. My doc oked it. Just told me to avoid the high mercury fish like tuna. Sushi in this country is generally flash frozen to kill parasites.

Edit: I just don't eat day old sushi like I would have before I got pregnant.
  • Oh my god, this thread just made me so happy and excited because I too have been craving sushi like nobody's business. Especially the kind with spicy sauces and huge hunks of wasabi!!! But have been avoiding it completely. Now I'm so tempted.
  • Going out for sushi on Friday!!

What everyone else said, but it's important it's high quality sushi so you don't get food poisoning from old or improperly maintained fish. I wouldn't go grab raw sushi from a gas station store. Also limit high Mercury fish whether cooked or raw.

I ate sushi at least weekly throughout my whole last pregnancy with my doctor's permission and my new doctor this time didn't have any objections either.

If you can't get high quality sushi you can always eat cooked things. But that's kind of defeating the whole purpose of eating sushi.

Either way, you're a whole lot more likely to get sick from cheap restaurant chicken than from good sushi

Also, there's like every child in Japan whose mom ate sushi whole pregnant. And Japan seems to be doing alright.

I have been wanting a spicy salmon roll soooooo bad. :(

BUT I will resist that urge until january... I'm sure It's all mental but I would feel weird eating it right now
  • I'm not giving up my sushi :) I love it and wouldn't be a happy camper without it. I didn't eat any raw fish during my first pregnancy but I'm all about eating sushi this time around as long as it's from a trusted place :)
  • If you go to a reputable place, and feel comfortable, doooooo it!!! I've had it like twice since getting pregnant.

I have a mom friend from Japan, she said when they find out they're preggo, the 1st thing they do is go eat plenty of sushi because it's so good for you.

I stay mindful of the amount of seafood (mercury) but I say have at it!!
  • Seriously now all you ladies got me craving sushi I especially love eating yellowtail sushi and spicy tuna hand rolls. I think I'm due for a sushi dinner this weekend

  • I eat cooked sushi like crazy when pregnant. There are a bunch of varieties to eat if you'd prefer not to go with raw. Having said that, a lot of women eat raw sushi with no problems :)

  • My doctor gave me the green light to eat sushi that's not mackarel or tilefish. I've been eating raw salmon, yellowtail, and a little tuna and it tastes SO good! Eat your sushi at a reputable place and enjoy!

  • I used to work at a sushi bar when I was pregnant with DS. I ate sushi all the time but it was only cooked. Eel roll, imitation crab, soft shell crab, smoked salmon, fried shrimp, fried white fish are all ok to eat as sushi rolls!

One lady would come in every week and eat raw sushi. Nothing bad ever happened to her baby. Not something I personally want to do though.

I've been craving sushi a ton this pregnancy and eating a lot of cooked sushi. Never thought about the fact that they cut it with the same knives as the raw sushi. Oops
  • Just happened upon this, and it seems like if you're going to a place where the use the same knives to cut raw food AND cooked food, maybe you shouldn't go there anymore...nobody who works in any kind of food service would do that and think it was ok. FWIW.
  • Years ago I unknowingly planned ahead for this. First, I bought DH a "Sushi for Dummies" and all the necessary tools. Second, I gave him a year to master his technique. Now I bask in homemade sushi, that can be easily made "hungry pregnant lady safe". Muhahah!

Feel the same here! I always wondered at my sushi bar where I used to work they would use the same knife then dip it in water with fresh squeezed lemon in it?
