Benadryl and Pregnancy

I am sure I am being absolutely paranoid but I wanted to get some other feedback. My doctor said benadryl was safe to use for my allergies. I have always religiously used benadryl for allergies and as a sleep aid. A few months ago I read a couple of studies that definitively linked the daily use of benadryl to significantly increased chance of dementia risks so I stopped using it. It mentioned nothing about a developing baby though but now it has got me thinking. My allergies are driving me crazy but I'm scared to take it too often and Claritin hasn't worked well for me in the past. What do you guys think?

Re: Benadryl and Pregnancy

  • My doctor said I could take benedryl both for allergies and as a sleep aid and it was totally fine. She also said my daily Allegra was fine (just not the D kind). I have allergy and exercise-induced asthma so it is very important that my allergies be kept in check.

  • Take Benadryl, but only when needed. It's safe. If the doctor tells you it is safe (mine did too), than I would trust her/him more than I trust Dr. Google.
  • That is sort of what I've been thinking but the increased risk of dementia study is pretty new (maybe January of this year) and I worry that there is still more to be discovered. If it increases the risk of dementia by over 50% for already born humans, I am worried about it during fetal development. I've been getting a little too research happy though and probably worrying myself a little too much lol.
  • I tend to be in the camp of if it's not absolutely necessary, don't take it.  Sure, a stuffy nose could be uncomfortable, but is adding extra chemicals to your body worth the risk? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for taking medicine normally, but I couldn't live with myself if I potentially could harm my baby.  That being said, I would do your own research and make an educated decision.

I was told Benedryl is safe but to only use it when absolutely necessary. If you can survive with a stuffy nose then I personally wouldn't take it however if your allergies are causing asthma attacks then that is a different story. I would also consider taking it on days when I know I don't want to be grabbing kleenex all the time - for example a wedding! lol
