Sleeping through the night

I've been reading a lot of posts about everyone's babies sleeping as long as 10 hours a night, how is this possible?! My son is 10 weeks exclusively breastfed and is still nursing every 2 hours. Lactation consultant had mentioned that it's still normal they need the calories for brain development as often as possible. Aside from that any tips to get him to sleep longer?

Re: Sleeping through the night

  • I believe it is just something that some babies will do and others won't. My exclusively breast fed son is 11 weeks and sleeps roughly 7 hrs at night. I let him eat on demand during the day and he cluster feeds every hour for 4 hours before bed. I figure that has something to do with it.

Good luck to you. Every two hours at this point must be brutal!

  • My 11 week old sleeps 6-8 hrs straight and has been nursing more often during the day but I honestly feel like swaddling is what helps the most. If he gets out of his swaddle he wakes up. I just got the zipadee Zip suit for when he starts to roll over. Good luck.
  • I feel your pain. I am up 3-5 times every night. Now that I am back at work it's really hard to be up so much at night feeding him. When will this end????
  • My baby is 12 weeks old but has been sleeping through the night since 5 weeks (we have been very blessed). He sleeps from around 9:30 pm to 7/7:30 am. He's always been a good sleeper (doing 4-5 hour stretches at night at just a few days old), but we do have a night routine to help keep consistency. We started this routine when he was about 6 weeks old. At (roughly) the same time every night we give him a bath, followed by lotion, a fresh diaper and onesie/sleeper, then his bottle, swaddle him, and put him down. We give him his last bottle in his room (or wherever your baby sleeps at night) versus the living room, and we keep the lights off/dimmed to prepare him for night time. That way he knows it's bed time. We also swaddle him, but only at night, again so he recognizes it's night time. I highly recommend swaddling. When our baby isn't swaddled and 'jumps' he throws up his arms and wakes himself up. Hope this helps!
  • Also, my baby is also on strictly breastmilk. I pump and bottle feed.
