1st appointment with midwife

Hi all, I'm 7weeks at the mo and have my first appointment with the midwife on the 21st so I will be around 9 weeks at that point. Both myself and OH are wondering what to expect? We know we will be talking about tests and screenings etc.. But when do they do a scan? I've seen some people post they've had scans really early and we are a little confused!

Re: 1st appointment with midwife

  • It all depends.. You may want to contact your midwife and ask her what to expect. I would assume you would have a dating ultrasound but of course can't tell you for sure.

  • I can only tell you what I experienced at my first appointment with my midwife. It all went down pretty much like this:

    1. Urine sample
    2. Weight
    3. Blood Pressure
    4. We went over expectations for the pregnancy and birth
    5. Talked about current symptoms and things to call her about in the future
    6. Heard the heartbeat on the doppler
    7. She shared a few stories and we talked about my best friend (she delivered her baby last year!)

    It was all very pleasant.

My first midwife appointment is on Monday. I went to an OB with my daughter so it will be interesting to see how going to a midwife will be different.

At the women's center in the town I live in, there are 2 midwives who you are assigned to for your first 2 appts, I'm guessing that's the case if you don't have a regular set OB you see in there. So, since I am newer to this town they stuck me with a midwife for my first appts. They will always do a confirmation apt where you pee in a cup and tell you yay you're pregnant. From there they set you up with a 'new ob' apt usually 3 weeks away. For the new OB appt you get pelvic exam-pap, breast exam, family history, any questions over anything, she ordered lab-blood work to as soon as you can and a dating ultrasound for 9-10weeks, blood pressure and weight is taken, and for mine this time I got an ultrasound on the spot because I've had 2 previous losses, for my very first pregnancy they did not do the ultrasound. Hope this helps! :)
