So many headaches...

Does anyone get headaches like 4-5 times per week? Have you talked to your doctor about them? I just want to know if I'm doing something wrong with my daily routine or my diet that is causing them. Sometimes they are headaches, and others migraines. Most of the time, I can just feel my heartbeat pulsing in my head. Not fun. :( any tips or suggestions to soothe them?

Re: So many headaches...

  • I have gotten them on and off the last two weeks but I think my issue is allergies. Since I do not want to take anything while pregnant I am just dealing with them. I have a raging one today and I am just trying to drink my fluids and push through until I can go home from work and lay down.

If they don't seem to get better I would definitely talk to your doctor. Feel better!

  • What week are you in? Did you have MS? Once MS subsides, headaches begin.
  • Drink grape juice!!!
  • @vidatorr I'm 14+5 weeks. I don't believe I had MS. I would hope my doctor would have told me.

@KerryS1009 I am on the same page as you. I am not taking anything, even Tylenol.
  • I'm 13w3d and never had morning sickness either, but started getting headaches the past week.  It seems worse when I'm hungry!  I'm also not taking anything and trying to avoid Tylenol even though my doctor said it's okay.  This is gonna sound weird and random for a headache lol, but I started using a plain, saline nasal spray a few times when my head has been pounding and I swear it helps.  A cold washcloth on my head has given me some relief too!

Try a hot foot bath! If it's blood pressure related, that can help to move pressure away from the head. If not at least it distracts a bit from the pounding. That, plus a cool washcloth on the forehead or neck, gives me a bit of relief.
  • I had likely the worst headache of my life yesterday. I tried massage, applying cold/heat, sleeping, drinking lots of water.... Everything I could think of doing. I had tears in my eyes it hurt so bad.

I finally gave in and took Tylenol. I was shocked how quickly it helped. I don't generally take medication even when not pregnant, but I am glad I gave in. It was horrible.

I have found in the past cold helps me. I get tension headaches pretty frequently.
  • I've been getting a lot of headaches but I feel like they always have a cause, I just have to figure out what it is each time...sometimes allergies and some nose spray helps, sometimes hunger, sometimes just fatigue and I need a nap, often dehydration...I find chugging a bottle of water is my first good step, then taking a shower. If you have no responsibilities, let yourself take a nap.

I personally find Tylenol does NOTHING, and alas cannot take Advil or Excedrin, so I've just been trying to deal with them drug-free, because while Tylenol is safe for me it would be taking it for no reason since it doesn't work AT ALL!

  • The Bump says that headaches and dizziness may start to intensify around 12 weeks, which could be caused by hormones, vision changes, drops in blood sugar, dehydration or stress
  • When I wake up with them, I am out of commission all day... and it sucks because I just started a new job in morning shift. Thank god I had a day off today because after I went upstairs for water and ice for my head I had to run to the bathroom. I don't want to be calling out sick from work all the time, I just started this job... but I haven't had morning sickness until like a week ago.
  • Hi guys, my doctor cleared me to add magensium (up to 500 mgs). I've always been prone to headaches and it has been much, much worse since I found out I pregnant. Before I was pregnant I had a lot of success with magnesium preventing as many headaches so I'm really hoping it helps. Otherwise, cold compresses are the best solution I've found since I'm also trying my best to avoid Tylenol.
  • So glad to see this post. I've been getting headaches in the afternoon since last week. 12-weeks (but I have a dating scan on Wednesday). I am avoiding Tylenol too, so I have found that cold compresses lessen the pain but don't rid me of the total headache. Glad to know I am not alone! Poor DH though, just as my MS gets better, I start coming home from work completely "out of order " with a headache!
  • Ice helps but I can't take it off or the pounding comes back. I have only had sickness once a day, but I will take the headaches over being over the toilet all day.. though it would get me out of work hahaha.
  • i've been getting terrible migraines and tension headaches...about 4-5 times per week...tylenol sometimes helps, but i understand your frustration...at my appt today, doctor said cheese can be a trigger (that's one of the few foods i've been tolerating!)
  • I get a headache everyday. I'm 14 + 2
I will take Tylenol but even then sometimes it doesn't help. I found that an ice pack on my forehead will relieve some pain. Bye bye ms hello headaches #2ndTri

I've been getting headaches everyday around 2pm. It doesn't matter what I eat or how much water I drink. I feel pretty run down by the end of the day.

I get headaches too. Mostly when I am tired. I've dealt with migraines for 15 years pre-pregnancy. I use these cool patches I find at wal mart or CVS and they're magical! There's a gel on the part that sticks to your forehead that stays super cold for hours. It works longer than a cold washcloth!

PS I don't know why that lady on the box with a headache looks so happy
  • I literally just got off the phone with my NP because I have been getting terrible migraines. She said eating small frequent meals to keep blood sugar up, yoga and exercise, lots of water, and a massage would help. I want a massage so badly but most places won't do one until you're into your 2nd trimester. My NP thought that was strange but guesses it is because of possible miscarriage which hasn't really been proven. I know I am getting a massage the second I can!

I'm 10 weeks + 6 and have had awful migraines / headaches for 4 days. I spoke to doctor yesterday who recommended acupuncture which I also had yesterday. It has relieved the pain a lot and she recommended I use frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel to put on the head pain instead of heat which has also helped. Obviously through the night peas are no good but the cooling migraine strips you stick to your head help loads

@klbh thank you so much for recommending a hot foot bath! I have been searching for weeks on how to help these migraines and this has been the first thing to give me some relief!
  • I have always suffered from headaches and migraines, triggered by light, smell and high pitched noises/music. Water, cold cloths on head and neck and this salve from the honest co for helping breathe, it has lavender and eucalyptus. My husbAnd massages it into the base of my skull and temples. Helps to ease the tension there. Having headaches nearly every day these past couple weeks :(
  • I had my appointment a couple of days ago and my OB basically said there's nothing she can do and I need to give in and take Tylenol. She says the biggest problem is probably that I'm not drinking enough water. On average a person needs 8 glasses a day, but pregnant women probably should drink 12-16 a day. Umm.. what? I feel like a fish.
  • I don't get headaches when I go to work, only my days off when I sit at home and relax and don't do anything (which sucks! I want to enjoy my days off, not be miserable). Glad to know I am not the only one. Hormones suck.
  • @vidatorr absolutely true! Literally within days of the MS passing I was getting headaches. I told hubby I'd rather have the MS I'm a huge baby for headaches.

I'm 14+2 weeks and I get 2-3 a week minimum but it'd always there a little bit. I drink a gatorade every few days and I do believe that keeps them from getting severe most of the time.

This happens to me too! I'm convinced it has to do with getting extra sleep, but obviously can't prove it.

  • YEEEEESSSS! I've been getting cluster headaches. I originally thought they were sinus related. Turns out they are related to my blood sugar drops. I wake up with one, I experience a blood sugar drop. It's been a really fun ride.

  • I've been getting bad sinus headaches (with some ear pain) and so I finally went to my ENT today who basically said that things swell in pregnancy and there's nothing I can do (except take Sudafed, but since that's Class C he didn't recommend it unless absolutely necessary), and to come back only if I had a fever or green mucus indicating infection.

I've been eating pretty consistently throughout the day, so I can't imagine it being blood sugar related (and my younger sister is Type 1 diabetic since age 5 so blood sugar stuff is always the first thing I consider when feeling off)

I was going to ask this as well - I am so relieved that I am not the only one facing terrible headaches.. I get them everyday and it is really intense. I tried applying a wet cloth and my head for a while. It helps a little bit !!
Have been avoiding medications till now .
  • Thanks for this post- I got headaches this weekend and they were awful!

  • I asked the doc about headaches and she said Tylenol and a cup of coffee. Did the trick for me!
  • When I eat salty food I get headaches they are massive! I get to eat healthier foods and now I don't get them as my much but every time I crave fast food I get a headache! Way to much salt!
  • Yes, the headaches/migraines are awful!! I went through a period of daily headaches around 12-16 weeks including multiple day migraines with nausea.

Sleep helped - but that wasn't always an option since they usually started during work. Tylenol had never worked for me pre-pregnancy and didn't do much to help either. I found deep pressure at the base of my skull by someone else helps (my DH isn't great at it, but my Mom made the headache go away in 5 minutes flat). My OB strongly felt they were tension headaches. She also OKd me to take Advil if nothing else is working (like during a multiple day migraine) since I'm out of the time frames most vulnerable to Advil (first and third tri).

The good news is they started to subside since week 16 and at nearly 18 weeks I'm down to none or 1 a week.

    Potential triggers for me were/are:
    Too much/not enough sleep
    Heat
Smoke (there were air quality warnings in my area due to forest fires)
Increased mucus leading to sinus headaches
    Dehydration/hunger
Exhaustion (days I have a lot of running around to do still result in a headache)

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have a "get out of life free" card for whenever pregnancy decides to kick our butts!? Life and work just don't seem to care when we're suffering from headaches :/
  • So nice to know others are having the same struggles. I rarely got headaches pre pregnancy but now I get them every few days. Anyone else dealing with congestion and/or allergies that were never a problem before?
