Parenting after 35

Wish I could predict the future...

Specifically whether or not another baby is in our future. We're pretty uncertain. If we are OAD, I would really like to start purging maternity and newborn clothes - but there's that "what if?" that holds me back.

Re: Wish I could predict the future...

  • I'm hanging on to expensive or difficult to acquire things, but purging everything else (e.g. $14 Old Navy dresses, etc.).  We might be OAD or we might change our minds in a year or two, but a) I definitely can't handle 2 under 2, and b) who knows if we'll be able to conceive at all the second time around, and if not, I prefer not to have so many stored clothing items I can't wear. We live in a small apartment and storage space is very valuable.

Perhaps you could store your favorites and toss the rest?

  • And honestly you can always buy what you need again. :). We definitely were not planning on three kids. Our little Sam was an oops. Lol. I had nothing. I had already sold or gotten rid of literally everything except furniture. This time around I didn't do new stuff. I did mostly resale shopping. I love resale. I get excited about the deal and the finds. And SO much of what I bought had brand new tags on it. I got a delux pack n play, nice double stroller, bumbo seat, car seat (new) etc for under $350. I got three huge bins of cloths. Probably spent $200.

You can always just squire stuff again if you change your mind. :)

We have a few shops here that buy maternity clothes too. I'm taking mine in tomorrow actually.

Yes, those are good strategies and perspective, thanks. I'm ok getting rid of stuff usually, just cheap and not a big shopper, so the thought of having to go buy stuff again is annoying.

  • I agree with PPs - purge it!  Maybe see if you can sell stuff to a consignment shop to recoup some of your money - that way you won't feel as bad if you then have to go buy stuff again if another LO is in your future.  Once Upon a Child is a national chain that buys and sells all sorts of baby/kids stuff, and Clothes Mentor is women's clothing resale chain that usually has a decent maternity section, so you might be able to get a few bucks for your things.

We have a boy who just turned 2 and a girl who is 3 months. I'll be 36 in a few weeks. I want to get rid of stuff. DH doesnt.

Edit to add this: we agreed I can purge it if I'm not pregnant by DD's 2nd birthday

  • Once Upon a Child pays pretty decent too. And some stores take maternity clothes too!! I just took all my maternity clothes there on Sunday. I had a decent sized bin. I got $60 and some items they didn't take.

  • I'm not sure I'm done myself. I want to keep all the things till I know I'm done but my little sister just had a baby so I "let her borrow" all my maternity/baby stuff. It was hard for me to even do that but it makes me feel good to see my nephew wearing some of my favorite outfits and playing with the toys. I was fortunate enough to have recieved a lot if it from an old co-worker and I've been so grateful to her for it. Maybe you could pass on some things to a friend or family member and get to see them continue to be enjoyed that way.

@designermomma, yes that keeps me holding on to things, also. I also got a nice stash of used clothes from a colleague. Would love to do the same for someone - but that means waiting until I know someone having a boy :)

  • Not just waiting for someone to have a boy, but to have a boy the same time of year! You want to make sure the winter clothes and summer clothes are the right size during the right time of year. Good luck!
