Rough first ultrasound

I had my first ultrasound today and it wasn't as happy as I was hoping it would be. First the baby had a low heart rate - it was only 80. I thought I was around 8 weeks but the doctor thinks I may be only 7 or even 6, she had a hard time measuring because of the way the baby was postioned and there was some interference on the screen. She said the low heart rate could've been due to that, and I have to go back in a week to get it checked again. I'm so nervous that something is wrong though. Then secondly I have struggled with weight my whole life. This is my second child and I hadn't lost all the baby weight from my first (I lost some but not all) I delivered at this hospital with this doctor and I loved it. Well today she told me that they have a new protocol that they won't accept people above a certain bmi. I am 1 away from that bmi. I was equally embarrassed and sad. If gain much weight at all I have to go to a new doctor at a hospital an hour away. I know I need to get my butt in gear and get healthier and I'm ready for it, I just know it's going to be really hard not gaining and really needing to loose weight but keep the baby healthy and growing. I'm just really sad with myself and worried about the baby :(

I'm right there with you! I had mine last week at 7w4d, the machine was crappy and really fuzzy, she could barely find the baby and once she did she tried to look for the hb and we only got to see it flicker, no measurement of hb at all. She said it looks like its growing right on track. Ih and she also told me that the skinner the girl the better picture they can get. I'm not skinny but I'm not huge either. Really irritated me. My next one is next tuesday and i will be 9w4d. The wait is killing me.
  • Wow, sorry about all that! I've never heard of a hospital refusing to deliver someone because their BMI wasn't good enough! :(
Hopefully your followup ultrasound will show baby is ok. T&Ps

I've never heard of such a thing!! So sorry!! Hugs!
Just focus on adding one healthy thing to your day that you don't already do: one less processed meal? One more walk around the block? One more glass of water instead of a calorie drink? Little things make a big difference! You can do it and be healthy for you and baby!!
  • That seems silly - BMI isn't always accurate picture of someone's health/weight. Sorry you are going through this!

    Hoping for the best!!
  • Omg.. what professional says the skinnier the girl the best the picture? That's just an awful thing to say... :-(

Um i know!! My bf and i were like ummm seriously!? She's one of the 2 midwives they stick you with for your first 2 appts sooo I'm hoping i don't get to see her after next appt at the end of july. I'm still in shock at what she said.
  • Thank you ladies for the positive thoughts and suggestions ❤️ @bbax44 that's terrible that she said that to you, I'm sorry you had someone like that doing your ultrasound! I hope you don't have to deal with her anymore either!
  • If it was an abdominal ultrasound it's often hard to see anything early on whether you are skinny or not!! At my hospital it's standard to use transvaginal until after 8 weeks. Fingers crossed that everything goes well for you!

Thank you all! I have to see her again for my 12 week appt at the end of july, but she is not doing my ultrasound next week thank goodness! And it was not a vaginal us and the baby was so tiny at 7w4d. I know there will be a big difference next week since i will be 9w4d. I'm so excited to see my little peanut again :)
  • T&P - FWIW - I was 9+1 for my first u/s this week - she started with an abdominal u/s and after about 2 seconds was like - nope - we're going to use the other probe...  I consider myself a healthy weight - but apparently "my uterus tilts backwards" ... so the lack of clear picture might have had more to do with how your organs are sitting than weight?  Just a thought - I get to wait 3 weeks for the NT scan and can't wait to see the LO again!

  • Are they allowed to discriminate by weight?  Never heard of such a thing.  I would question that.

*I'm not trying to imply anything about the weight/BMI of OP or other posters in this thread*

I would think yes - but only in extreme cases - i.e. beyond the weight capacities of hospital beds and equipment, etc.  In a little googling - the issue seems to be 1) equipment/personnel limitations and 2) higher risk levels in the pregnancy overall and higher risk of complications in birthing (especially in regards to water births) - so it may not be a weight-issue, per se, but that the hospital isn't equipped to handle potential complications?  Though most of what I found seemed to talk about weight not BMI - so take it or leave it.
