Continuous Headache

Is anyone else experiencing continuous headaches? I have one pretty much on a daily basis ranging from dull/annoying pain to can barely sit up straight pain. I've been taking acetaminophen for the really painful ones but they just never seem to completely go away. Is anyone else dealing with this? I'm going to the doctor's tomorrow for a follow up appointment and I'm planning on mentioning it.

Thanks!

Re: Continuous Headache

  • OMG yes, ME! Once I hit 12w the headaches came with it, sometimes everyday or every other day. :( I take Tylenol when I can't take it anymore, and it sometimes helps. But it makes me wonder if something is wrong cause they are so frequent. I'm taking my vitamins, drinking a ton and eating healthy, I'm 15w today. Please let me know what your doctor says!

I will, my only fear with them occurring so often is that headaches are a sign of preeclampsia which other mothers in my family have had. I've also made it a point to dink lots of water and eat healthy, thinking that would help but so far no change. Mine started about week 10, I'm 16 weeks now and it just feels like they've gotten worst.

What happen to the 2nd tri being the nice easy one!

  • Yes! I think mine right now might be more tension related so I'm looking into a prenatal massage.
Keep us posted on what the doctor says.

  • I am SO glad I am not alone in this! Mine started at 13w I am now 16w and it is killing me. They last 3-4 days and I usually only get 1 or 2 days "off". I drink tons of water, sleep as much as I can, I eat healthy and take my vitamins, normal blood pressure- can't figure it out! I went to see my Dr because on at least 6 occasions I've vomited from the pain. She said it is hormones and is very common, usually goes away by 18-20 weeks. She said if the vomiting becomes more frequent to call, and extra strength Tylenol is okay. The tylenol hasn't come close to helping. Bring on 18 weeks!!!

I get them daily, sometimes I need to drink water or eat a snack, other times I can tell its because of sinus pressure due to increased blood flow and swelling.
  • I suffered from terrible headaches until about a week ago (right around hitting 15 weeks). I tried a ton of stuff. There are a few other threads from the last few weeks on the topic with some great remedy ideas. Definitely check those out. Headaches are the worst!
  • I have them on a daily basis- very annoying! Wish Tylenol would work. I really don't think it does anything at all!!!
  • I also have them daily. My doctor gave me a prescription for a headache medicine. It has tylenol and caffeine in it. I still have the headaches everyday but atleast this takes them away. The regular tylenol wasnt doing anything.
  • Yes! I've had them intermittently but never had them pre pregnancy. I'd be sooo hydrated and would fall asleep and wake up with a nasty headache. I figured it might be on the days I was skipping coffee in the morning, even though I wasn't a heavy coffee drinker before. The morning coffee and tons of water seems to have eliminated the issue

I mentioned it to the doctor at my check up appointment this morning and she advised that they are actually very common and normal especially when pregnant with a girl (something with the hormones). She said to stick with the Tylenol and if I have to over-caffeinate in order to get rid of the headache then that was fine as long as I also continuing drink lots of water. She also suggested trying Pedialyte popsicles as it may be just because my potassium and magnesium levels have dropped which can cause headaches.

Was kind of hoping for a miracle pill but with pregnancy I know the docs are hesitate to give you anything so I'll try her suggestions and hope for the best! Praying by the end of the 2nd tri they have subsided a little.

  • I get them everyday basically since I got my BFP!  I had this with my other pregnancies so I'm not surprised.  It is rather annoying and makes it so hard to function sometimes.  Tylenol does nothing so I don't even bother taking anything.

  • @GenH83, thank you for letting us know what your Dr said.
It makes me feel better that I've chugged caffeine in an attempt to rid myself of headaches.

  • I have had headaches off & on for 3 weeks now -- they are the worst! I've tried Tylenol (doesn't help), drinking water, sitting in the dark, etc. -- it seems the only thing that works for me is a little bit of caffeine.

Just curious, all you headache sufferers, do you think this has anything to do with gender? Just for fun question...not asking scientifically. :) I don't know what I'm having yet, but wondering, do any of you know what you're having? Would be interesting to know if it's more common w/girls or boys with this group.

Again, don't care that there's no science behind it, just curious. :)

  • @esscapelle - would be fun to know, but i'm team green so unfortunately I cannot help with that!
  • I started getting headaches at about 14 weeks, morning. Sickness passed and hello headaches!! I notice them more when I haven't drunk a lot of water, but I get them probably every 2nd day :(
  • I actually have gone to the chiro twice since my headaches started at week 14 (I'm at 19.5 now) and the adjustments releasing the tension from my neck, back and shoulders definitely helps for a few weeks til I get out of Waco again.

And yes, I made sure that my chiro had experience with preggo ladies before I went after my BFP (I know it's a point of discussion and debate around here). I actually see more and more bellies at his office each time I go!

Good luck with the headaches. They are definitely annoying.
  • I have experienced headaches when o am low on sleep or dehydrated. See if more sleep and upping your water intake helps?
  • Weeks 14-16 I had really bad headaches. I am 18wks now and my headaches have resided.
  • 15 weeks here. They have started about two weeks ago. I was hoping they would have subsided a little when I get to 19/20 weeks... I guess I lucked out on not having any morning sickness so I really shouldn't be complaining now. But these headaches are uggghh.. I had a stash of breakfast goodies next to my bed (I get so weak I can't even make it up the stairs when I'm in full headache mode) and my MIL found my stash and hid it away so now I don't know what I'm going to do. D: urrgghh.

I just started getting headaches on Saturday, didn't have one yesterday then got a slight one today. On Saturday I took 1 Tylenol and really didn't want to! Today's hasn't been bad enough (yet) for Tylenol. My next option I think will be going to the chiropractor. It always seems like with me, when I get headaches, my hips, back and neck are out of alignment. Last time I went to the chiropractor for headaches, he popped my neck and within 5-10 mins my headache was gone ..was also pre-pregnancy though. This Wednesday I'll be 16w so I was wondering if 15w is when headaches start..ugh :(
  • I'm still getting headaches/migraines and I'm 19w2 days. My doctor prescribed me Tylenol with codeine and referred me to a neurologist for the migraines.
  • I'm getting horrible headaches as well, daily and they change throughout the day. I feel a lot of tension in my neck and sinus pain. I know here (Chicago area) the mold is extremely high which might be part of the cause. I'm miserable with these headaches. I'm team green so I don't know if it means anything about the gender, but I could see how it could make sense. Good luck! Hopefully these will be over soon! 3rd trimester is going to be amazing for us! Lol
  • I was having debilitating headaches for a few weeks. Tylenol didn't even touch them. I also tried essential oils, hydrating, back/neck massages, esverything I could think of. After getting a body pillow my headaches finally eased off. I pinpointed it to my neck pain. My body pillow and occassionally using salonpas (stick on patches for pain) on my neck I've been able to control them. I'll definitely go to the chiropractor if they start happening again!
  • I've been getting them daily as well. My midwife suggested having a cup of coffee when I get one. The caffiene has worked wonders.
  • I have headaches just about everyday and I take acetaminophen for my arthritis but it doesn't seem to do anything for my headaches. It doesn't help being in the Florida heat
  • Yes, I've had a continuing headache for about 2 weeks. Dr said its normal.. Just stay hydrated etc. Hopefully passes in third tri? **fingers crossed**
  • @esscapelle team green here as well. However my skin has been super bad and my hair is falling so I have most of the "girl symptoms". Haha
  • I've always struggled with tension headaches. My body has a horrible way of dealing with any stress. Even though my mind thinks I can handle anything, my head likes to ache everyday for about 4-5 hours. The pain is behind my eyes to the back of my ears. I find that it gets worse when I watch tv or look at any other screen. Pregnancy has not made a difference.

I cut out drinking coffee last October and that helped too. Eating super healthy and constantly drinking water helps.. And I mean constantly. I probably drink over 15 cups of water a day... Meaning lots of trips to the bathroom.

If the pain gets super bad I lay down in the dark and drink hot tea. But most of the time nothing helps the "annoying" pain. It sucks but it's part of my life.
  • @chaelainev I'm sure you probably have but wanted to suggest getting your eyes tested. I had really similar headaches a while back when I started school again and put it down to stress but turns out my eyes were just incredibly fatigued so I have glasses for long periods of reading/screen time/study.
  • I had a horrible time with multiple types of headaches during my last pregnancy. Vision can change with fluctuations in fluid pressure and cause eye strain, tenting headaches, hormonal migraines... With my son I had frequent sinus infections. Knowing the type of headache can help with treating it. In general, I found cool packs to be helpful.

As far as concerns for preeclampsia, your OB should be screening for signs at each visit. That's part of why they should be checking blood pressure and testing urine each time. I hope this helps but definitely talk to your doctor to help alleviate your worries.
  • I wake every morning with one. :((
  • Oh dont get me started with headaches! I am a migraine patient not fun during pregnancy at all! Pre-pregnancy i was taking maintance drugs (beta blockers- BP meds) to prevent migraines and Imitrex to get rid of them on onset. Unfortunately all of these wonderful meds that would prevent or get rid of my headaches came to a sudden stop the moment my Dr found out i was pregnant. The first trimester was down right awful...headaches were in full force, of which my Dr says its because of the high level of hormones. You see the problem with me, is i cant just have a "normal headache" it always turns into the "pain behind the right eye, throbbing, light sensitivity, vomiting (of which morning sickness did not help) type of headache. All of this, and all i could take was freakin regular strength tylenol....what a joke, for someone who is use to high maintenance drugs! So, then started researching online and of course came the home remedies, of which none of them worked...so i pretty much layed in my dark room with a cold compress over my forehead for days...my headaches last for days...until one day my sister in law and i were talking and she told me to try a nasal saline spray...she said maybe it will help "clear up everything" i thought to myself, yea right "clear up everything" at thia point i was trying everything...from soaking feet in cold water, to tying something tight around my head, i will sure try the saline! So, i did...and low and behold, i got some relief! I say heck, give it a try! I am now 17 weeks and my headaches are not nearly as bad...i do have daily headaches of which i take 2 regular strength tylenols and use my nasal spray :) But i do have to say they were awful during the first trimester!

It's amazing some of the things we finally find that work. My cousin kept ended up in the ER with severe migraines. For her they started allergy shots and that was all she needed.

For me, I had tried all the prescription stuff long before I was pregnant. Besides imitrex nothing worked (then of course the wonderful rebound headaches that were as bad). I'm allergic to Tylenol so I thought pregnancy would be a nightmare with migraines. Neurologist had me take high doses of B2 daily, it took a while, but worked wonderfully. This time I started early and have yet to have a migraine with this pregnancy- compared to the near daily ones previously. Whatever works, right?
  • Exactly! Whatever works! I have actually heard alot of success stories about the B12 injections. Im really suprised my MD hasnt suggested them. I have also thought it my be my allergies as well, my husband keeps telling me he thinks its allergy induced (but what does he know! )Lol. I really think its allergy induced as well. But i will never admit that to him. Lol.
