How to know everything is doing well (Reasons why I'm crazy)

This is my first pregnancy and am expecting twins! Saw both heartbeats at almost 8 weeks! Had my first appointment with my doctor today and he just did a culture & talked to us about twin pregnancies. Have to wait 4 weeks for the next ultrasound! How can I know if everything is okay with both in the meantime? I feel completely normal (well, pregnant normal) and no spotting or cramping really. But how do I know they both still have strong heartbeats and doing well? I know I'm definitely overreacting but it's so nerve wracking! Any non-FTM have any tips?

  • I know it's hard not to stress (especially as a first timer), but pretty much just try to stay preoccupied. You can buy a doppler for a few hundred bucks I think to keep your mind at ease, but if you're anything like me, you might get a little too obsessive and use it constantly.

if you start to have symptoms that totally aren't normal (or ones that seem to be more than normal if that makes sense?) don't hesitate to call your doctor's office. I'm sure they can help keep your mind at ease :)

  • You don't, but you be thankful that you are pregnant today and try not to worry. Miscarriages can happen to anyone and anytime, its some scary stuff but you can't dwell on that, believe me I know. I would try to look at the positive and be thankful that today, you are pregnant with twins. Once you start feeling movement down the road it will make the world of difference. Congrats on twins too BTW!

I agree with the PP. You just have to occupy yourself and your mind. Overthinking everything is going to drive you nuts. Definitely call your care provider if anything concerns you!

  • I agree with PP. but I think it is hard even as a STM. here's to hoping the weeks go by quickly, yet again slowly. This is my last pregnancy unless something unexpected happens down the road.
  • You just have to be positive that everything is still going well! And take care of your body and eat enough to grow two babies! Believe me you will start feeling very pregnant soon enough and you will definitely know everything is still going well when you have 8 limbs moving around in there! It's so hard to wait for those next ultrasounds when you get to see them again, but time will go so fast!

  • I'm carrying twins too, and so far (9 weeks tomorrow) I've have had minimal symptoms except a fair amount of pressure.

But anyhow, I have a Sonoline B Doppler from my pregnancy in 2012 that cost under $50 at the time. It worked great and gave me piece of mind before I was able to feel my baby move.

  • @ss456 I've been seeing the sonoline b dopplers being advertised on Facebook! Seems they've updated them and are around $35 now! I've been looking into getting one.

I've seen these but I thought they didn't work under about 20 weeks!
  • With my 2012 pregnancy, with a little effort on repositioning, I could find the heartbeat starting at 10 weeks with the Sonoline B. By 12 weeks it was really easy for me to find. I think I heard if you're especially heavy, you might not be able to hear it as early?

I read some info that using a Doppler too much might not be a good idea. Something about concerns not knowing what the extra sound waves could do to a little one, so I didn't use it every day. But I loved it on those days I had myself freaked out that something was wrong.

  • I might have to get a Doppler. I feel like a crazy person but if it would give me peace of mind...

How would I decipher the two heartbeats? I feel like I might shouldn't get one, I would be too compulsive about it, haha.
  • Unfortunately the anxiety of worrying about something happening to your babies does not go away once they're outside the womb. I'd suggest starting now to work on ways to handle the anxiety and fear such as prayer and talking to someone about it who can help you.
  • As someone who has been through a m/c, I still worry (because I know that things can go wrong with no symptoms), but it helps me to think back to my m/c and realize that I'm not having any of the symptoms that I had during that time, like unusual cramping or bleeding (bleeding can be normal too.. Not always a sign of m/c).

I also think of any little sign of sickness or discomfort as a sign that the baby is doing ok in there.

Personally I wouldn't get a Doppler because it's hard enough for the nurses to find both heartbeats! I think it would just worry you even more if you didn't find one or both heartbeats.

My OB actually advised against a Doppler. For one they are not FDA approved for home use. Also she said they can give a false sense of security. For example maybe the baby is moving less but you are reassured bc you pick up the heartbeat instead of seeking medical advice. Last she said that unless you are trained to decipher the difference lots of moms actually pick up there own heartbeat and mistake it for the baby. Just food for thought.
