Heart murmur?

Anyone's LO have a heart murmur? My guy's pediatrician found one at his 6 week appointment. They hadn't heard it before and it is predominantly heard on one side. His pediatrician said that it's really common for kiddos to have them, not have a problem, and grow closed on their own but was concerned that they hadn't heard it at all before now and about the way it sounded. After having two other doctors listen they decided they wanted to see it. So on Thursday we are going to the pediatric cardiologist for an echo-cardio-grahm ( don't know how to spell that one).
Anyway, just curious if anyone else has dealt with this. I'm curious about what to expect or anyone's experiences.

Re: Heart murmur?

  • My lo has one where there is shunting. The dr yesterday said that it usually heals itself by 8 weeks but if not may require medicine or small surgery.
When we did the echo yesterday they told me there were 2 holes instead of just 1 that I was told at birth so a little nervous and pissed that no one told me.
The pediatric cardiologist said some signs to look for were not wanting to eat, fever, and unusual heavy breathing that lasted a while.

  • My 3 year old has one that wasn't diagnosed until his 2 year well child visit.  They said that they probably hadn't heard it before because babies have really fast heart rates and the increased speed of the heart pumping covered the sound.  We went and did a ekg a at pediatric cardiologist and they said it was an "innocent heart murmur" and that it would likely go away on its own.  They did mention that if it didn't and the pedi could still hear the murmur at 7/8/9 years old, when our son would likely be involved sports, that they would reexamine with a echo.  At his 3 year well child our pedi could no longer hear the murmur.

They are super common.  Try not to worry.
