2nd Trimester

Small baby

I am 22 weeks and I was recently told at my 20w scan that my placenta looks great and the scan went well, however she is small and they want me to go get a growth scan done. She has always had a strong heart beat and is very active. Before I was pregnant I was only 5'2 and 113lb, could it be we just have a small baby? This is our first child so I'm a little nervous does anyone else have experience with this?

I had a scan at 26 weeks where I was told she was in the 27th percentile for size with a "tiny head and short legs." DH and I are both small so we figured that was about right. But she came out 7lbs 7oz and 20.5" (both about average) one day early. A lot can change before your due date, it's probably nothing to worry about.

I don't know why they need a growth scan when the 20w anatomy scan typically measures growth already...are they having you do the growth scan in several weeks just to check up on it?

  • They want me to do it when I'm 24 weeks, it's just so frustrating because everything else is normal, she's just small.
  • Exact same thing here! Baby was 11oz at my anatomy scan where I was 20w+4. They said all good no concerns then said that. I have to go back in 24 weeks, so about another week and a half. It's exactly that, a growth scan to make sure baby is still growing at a healthy rate and above the tenth percentile. Idk what happens if they aren't though. I've been drinking Ensure to get more protein and try to put on a little more weight since I have only gained 6 lbs(5'6", currently 135). She's said she's assumes it's just my 'petite' size though. So it's not like I'm super small, but i prob haven't been getting enough protein bc I can't eat much meat and was nauseous til 15 weeks. I was a small baby if that matters. I'm anxious for my appt on 7/14. Keep in touch, can let you know how it is! Glad I'm not alone. A couple girls posted same thing a few weeks ago too.
  • Okay great I'll keep you updated also
  • DS was within all the normal ranges until he was born 3 weeks early (1day preterm). He's is now 21 months and has been 12 percentile or lower his whole life. He is healthy and growing, just small. I am only 5'3", but DH is 5'11". Don't worry about her being a little small, she'll have plenty of time to grow!

So we found out why baby was "small" the due date was over 2weeks off!
  • First of all those scans are often inaccurate when it comes to weight so it is smart for your doctor to watch it, but don't freak out about it.  Also there is nothing wrong with having a small baby.  DD was 6lb 4oz and is perfectly healthy.  She left the hospital only a day after being born and has no health issues.  On the plus side a smaller baby comes out easier.

Why do they say now the due date is off 2 weeks? I heard the dating ultrasounds early on are the most accurate for dating bc then growth varies between everyone and when baby gets spurts..:
