6 week growth spurt

baby boy is 6 weeks tomorrow! That means he has been cluster feeding like mad yesterday and today. However, he had been sleeping about 5-6 hour stretches overnight, feed, then 2-3 more hours. Last night he was up almost every 2 hours to eat. Anyone else experiencing this right now?? When can I expect it to pass?

Not experiencing this yet - my DS turns 6 weeks on Friday. Thanks for the heads up and good luck!

  • When my guy went through his 6 week growth spurt he did just what your LO is doing. It will last a day or two and then go back to normal. My guy actually started sleeping longer at night after that

Ugh I went through it yesterday and crying the whole day if I wasn't feeding her! Good luck!
  • I'm dealing with this now! LO turned 6 weeks yesterday. These past 2 days he's fed like crazy. It's gone from every 3ish hours to every 90 minutes or so. He had also started have a longer Wei interval at night, 4-5 hours, which had totally vanished. Last night he was up every 2.5 hours. Hoping for a better night tonight!

  • Ummm our little guy just slept from like 830-345. Which is nice for mom and dad but not for my boobs. Lol. Oh well. One night won't hurt my supply right? Especially since he cluster fed for 2 days straight!
  • @agilber3 - don't worry about your supply at all. Enjoy your sleep! Although I know that can be difficult when your boobs feel like bricks!! Your body will adjust once LO starts doing this more consistently. Or so I've been told. My DS does long sleep stretches every second night so my body has yet to adjust. Sigh.
  • My LO is 5.5 weeks right now and going through this. Today is the third day, so I'm hoping I'm over the hump of it. He gets so frustrated at night bc he is so hungry that he doesn't want to latch and then gets mad he isn't getting full. Crying, crying crying to be held. I haven't had sleep in 2 days because he wakes up every time I go to put him down. Just now got him in his crib, so fingers crossed. This morning he threw up all over me and I never thought I would be able to say, "I have throw up in my vagina" and it sound normal to me. It was EVERYWHERE. I was screaming for Daddy to come here and he's just passed out asleep completely oblivious. I woke Daddy up 20 minutes before his alarm for work just to hold him because I was getting really frustrated and needed to go outside. LO has developed a punch now to go with his undying hunger for boob. So when he gets mad, he punches his fist, which hits me in the face or a sore nipple repeatedly. After 2 nights of that I sort of snapped this morning at my husband to take him. Daddy said, "He can't help it." I know...but after hours of that it gets old.
  • Gosh, that sounds like what I've been going through the past few nights! Feeding non-stop and crying anytime I put her down. I've been feeling like a zombie!

My baby has reflux though, so I don't know if the fussiness is due to that or a possible growth spurt. I've been trying just about everything to get her to sleep through the night, or even just a couple of hours at a time. Hope things turn around for you! Know that you're not alone!
  • I'm going through this new..... Every 2 hrs baby boys wakes up to eat....sigh...
  • This is happening to my little girl right now as well. I forgot about the 6 week growth spurt and am so glad I have read these posts. Eating times seem to have doubled and she seems absolutely angry the minute she's hungry. She also punches, flails her arms and can't seem to settle. The only thing that will settle her in the evening is turning the fan above the stove on. Calms her right down.
  • @JuliaChomcy have you heard about the 5 S's and how the inside the uterus sounds like a vacuum? Maybe that's why your baby likes the fan! My boy was overtired last night and we have a sound machine so I played the ocean and he fell asleep within 20 minutes (also rocking him). Shushing works too!
  • Is it possible to be going through this at 7.5 weeks? He was born early lol
  • Thank goodness it isn't just me. My DS is 6 weeks and 2 days and today, if he wasn't latched to me, he was fussing. At least I got afew 10 minute nap breaks... I know some of you said they start sleeping longer after this growth spurt, would that happen to apply to naps as well?

I was hoping the same thing about naps but unfortunately my baby sleeps less during the day! She is 9 weeks 2 days and takes about 3-4 15-20 min naps a day. No more long naps.. But is sleeping good at night!

  • Going through it ALL right now. He was born two weeks early so I'm considering it 6 week growth spurt. He cried every time I put him down today and he's still at it. Lord help me. Good thing he's so cute!
  • @dm28 - YES!!! A lot of research shows that growth spurts, wonder weeks, etc. will be based on expected due date and not gestational age. So your LO might hit these a bit later than you'd expect. My DS was born a week after EDD and I notice that he often hits these milestones a week early!
  • Yes!! I sat in my rocking chair for 3 hours at a time, nursing left breast, burp, switch sides, repeat. I was getting frustrated because all I did was nurse him. But, it only lasted about a week, and he's settled back into a routine. Good luck...and don't give up!!
  • Going through this at 7.5 weeks! My son is eating a lot more than usually and sleeping in short bursts due to the hunger.
  • My LO has totally regressed with her sleeping this week and has been hungrier than usual! She is 6 1/2 weeks and I am hoping it's a growth spurt! She was sleeping 5-6 hour stretches at night and now she's up every half hour or so! She naps fine during the day but night has totally regressed this week. Hoping it's a phase and she is better soon! I even upped her bottles before bedtime to hold her over longer and no such luck.
