Baptism

If any of you are baptizing your LO, when are you doing it? I may end up doing it this summer yet before I go back to work at the end of August. Also, did you do anything special when you asked the godparents to be your child's godparents? Just curious how you all went (or will) about it.

Re: Baptism

  • Baptizing my LO at the end of August, he will be exactly 3 months old on the day! I didn't do anything crazy to ask the god parents, I actually asked them flat out while I was pregnant :)

  • I am doing mine in September. Asking with cards. Still missing one person. My husbands side is hard to do
  • My husband and I are having our little girl baptized on August 9th, which is our one year anniversary. We asked our Godparents before our LO was born with a picture frame of her ultrasound picture.
  • We're having our LO baptised on 22nd November, it was the only slot available this year, we just asked the god parents didn't do anything special

We baptisized in June. Just asked godparents
  • We don't do baptism in my church but we do baby dedications - which is very similar. No Godparents though. Ours will be September 20th (DS will be exactly 4 months). And it's the next baby dedication date available.
  • We are baptizing DD on July 19 . She will be 3 days shy of 3 month. It just worked out we had family from both sides visiting at that time. We just asked our godparents , didn't do anything special
  • We are baptizing my boy on August 9 he will be about 11 weeks then. One of my godparents will be moving across the country soon so I wanted to do it before she left at the end of August. Plus I don't know what my work schedule will look like when I return (I usually work Sunday's). It makes the most sense to do it now on leave than when work and daycare are in full swing. I just asked my 2 sets of couple friends to be the godparents. Nothing special! Lol
  • Our LO was baptized last weekend at 7 weeks old. I'm a teacher and we wanted to do it at the beginning of the summer, so the party wasn't hanging over our head and we could enjoy our LO before I go back to work in September. We didn't do anything to ask the Godparents, we just asked them. We did make up invites from Walmart (online) and they didn't cost an arm and a leg. Well worth it.
  • I'm been thinking about it but haven't talked to hubby about it, but I do know we haven't decided on godparents for our baby, kinda a downer and I don't think we will have godparents for him. We don't have any close friends that are married that we feel will be a good fit and or family. However we do have my husband brother and wife, we are godparents to their babies, so I think they will be the only option. I have a friend that wonders if she is going to be the godparent because she asked me and I told her not sure if we are doing the godparent thing. I had godparents when I grew up, but they did absolutely nothing for me growing up, although they have my husband and I a generous wedding gift. We're just having a hard time choosing godparents for our little one.

Why do the godparent need to be married to each other? Is this s religious rule?
  • My LO's Godparents are a sibling and a cousin (of mine). Neither are married, but both are established in their careers and lives and above all else, if God forbid something happened to my husband and I, we would be ok with either Godparent raising our child.
  • It's been hard for me to choose too. I don't know too many other Catholics. I wanted my sister to be her godparent but they have to be baptized and confirmed Catholic, which she's only been baptized. Her godparents aren't the ones who would raise her if anything happened to me, though. Around us they're just considered "spiritual guides." Still a tough decision!

If you haven't asked this yet, it might be worth double-checking with your church to see if both godparents need to be baptized and confirmed.  It seems weird, but multiple of my friends have only had to choose one Catholic godparent, and the other wasn't required to be. DH is godfather to his friend's kid, and he hasn't even been baptized Catholic.  And my goddaughter's godfather wasn't either, but since I was, it was fine.
  • Our baptism date is also July 19. I just flat out asked the Godparents but i plan to get them a special Godparent frame from the Hallmark store as a gift
  • My DD was baptized on June 20th. She was 11 weeks old and it worked out great. I asked the godparents right after she was born. I have to share a picture too just because :)
