Baby girl name

What do you guys think of the name Clarwyn? Hubby wants something unusual, but he doesn't think it sounds like a "real" name. My mom says it's more common in Australia! I think it's really pretty. It's similar to the Welsh name Claerwen, which means "clear light"; but I think it could also mean "bright and pure" (from the Irish "clar" and the Welsh "-wyn". Would it sound too weird if you guys heard it?

    It sounds odd to me it may be the way it's spelled like Klar-wyn. Like it sounds very blocky and unnatural maybe I'm pronouncing it wrong. I like claerwyn so much more like i feel likes it's pronounced Claire-wyn. It sounds so much more feminine and pretty. If you do like the name I would maybe consider the welsh spelling (but with the wyn :)). The way you had it spelled sounded just really unattractive to my ears lol if you know what I mean.

  • To me it sounds like a name out of Harry Potter or something. I wanted to know how to pronounce it so I went to behindthename.com but Clarwyn is not a recognized name???

  • I would go with the original spelling, especially when choosing an unusual name.
  • How do you pronounce it?  I've never heard that name before.

  • @jizzypuff is right, with this spelling it is pronounced klar-win. I don't like the other pronounciation, so we probably wouldn't use that. I haven't been able to find it on any baby name site either, and was agreeing with hubby that it wasn't a "real" name, but my mom googled it and found it is used, just rarely, and apparently not ever in the U.S.

    @caityrose the y is because it's Welsh :)
  • @beansideirae I think you should pick the name then if you love it ^.^
  • that's what my mom says too :) I just worry other people will look down on her for having a weird name :-/

    hubby suggested Clara instead, with Clarwyn as a special family pet name. I think I might be ok with that. I just hope he doesn't remember it's a Doctor Who character, or he'll decide it's too popular and we'll be back to square one!
  • @beansideirae meh there are gonna people who may not like it but I doubt anyone would look down on her for having a weird name. Now teasing may be another factor but anyone can tease any name nowadays. My name is Jezell (Giselle is the correct spelling but my mom was too out of it when they asked her to fill out the paperwork and back then they were rude to her and rushed her to fill it out so my mom told the nurse spell it however -__-). But when I started highschool everyone thought it was funny to call me Jizz (because people assume it's pronounced Jizz-el) lemme tell you that shit sucked and I hated my name but I got over it. So go ahead and pick it ^.^ just be ready for tons of mispronunciation slow
