Stranger fear development?

Hello! I'm a FTM, and My little one is 15 weeks now and lately she will be staring at someone (not usually with mom) and suddenly her eyes bulge and she SCREAMS. And screams, and screams and cries, as if she just realized they weren't who she thought they were. She seems completely terrified and it takes a lot to get her to calm down. Has anyone else's baby ever went through this? She's only done it with me once but she does it often with her dad, daycare provider, and grandmas within the last week. What gives?

Re: Stranger fear development?

  • None of these people are really strangers though, so I'm a little boggled.

  • My daughter literally just started this today! My boyfriends aunt came over to meet her for the first time and after about 30 seconds of the aunt holding her she pouted and then started screaming. I hope it was just a fluke. My mom only gets to see the baby about once a month.

Oh no!!! It's scary too, especially if your not expecting it. Hopefully our babies are just going through a short phase. I want to go to the fireworks tonight but she's been so jumpy lately I'm thinking it will be a disaster.
  • Babies develop stranger anxiety usually around six to nine months, but my LO has been reacting like this with a few people recently. I think it is more of a development of an awareness of who mom is and who isn't mom. I also have noticed that she will look at me for reassurance when she's in an unfamiliar situation. Hopefully this phase will pass soon as the crying at strangers is a little startling for me at times! But she's usually fine once she sees me and sees that I'm ok with it, and I can leave her without a problem. She's not really attached to me like other infants are when true stranger anxiety occurs.
  • My daughter is also 15 weeks and does the same thing. I'm the only one who can instantly soothe her. My pedatritian said just to let her cry but she screams so much and gets herself way too worked up. It happened out of no where too
  • My daughter is doing the same thing. If it's not mom or dad then she freaks. I wasn't expecting it to happen so soon. I've heard the get attachment issues more like 6-9 mo not 3! Hopefully just a phase?
  • I know mine was just a phase. For about five days this lasted and she hasn't done it since. I'm sure it will come back for a time 6-9ish months!
  • Same with my 15mo daughter. Did it with grandma, and two friends. Lasted about a week and now she's ok with people again, however I'm cautious and will pass her to new people rather than letting them pick her up, at least until she gets to know them for now. She smiles and seems curious about people now too.
