Dental X-rays

I have a dentist appointment next week and I was told they will be doing X-rays. I informed them I was 16 weeks pregnant and was told it will still be fine to have them done since I am in the 2nd trimester. I then called my OB office and I was told the X-rays are fine as long as they double shield me. Even though I'm being told they are safe, I am still hesitant/paranoid. Any one else have X-rays done while pregnant or have any thoughts on it?

Re: Dental X-rays

  • I had an appointment at the end of June. I opted out of the X-rays and just had the cleaning even though I was supposed to have them done then. I am scheduled to get the X-rays done at the beginning of January (baby due early Dec.). Personal preference. Since both your OB and dentist are fine with you having them done, it's a matter of what you are most comfortable with. They can't force you to do something you are not comfortable doing. I will say, however, I am glad I had a cleaning done. Good luck to you!

  • My OB told me the same thing. I'll probably go ahead and do the x-rays with the double shield because I figure if my OB is not concerned then I shouldn't be either!

  • I had dental x-rays (bitewings) in my first trimester...only one shield. I had no objections after reading about how much radiation one receives during these routine x-rays.

  • I chose not to have them done for my appointment in May, but its totally up to you.  My dentist said that as long as I wasn't in any mouth pain or felt like anything was wrong with my teeth, I could wait until after baby to have them done at my next appointment.  If there was something then he would recommend just one X-ray of that tooth only.  Ultimately, it's your choice!
  • Thank you ladies for your advice & insight!
  • My dentist said they opt not to do it just to be safe. Missing one set of X-rays never hurt anyone :) I did get my regular cleaning, though.

  • I go to the dentist Friday and have to have an-x-ray performed. The dentist called my OB for authorization and he said it was fine.
