Baby position

I'm 31 weeks, and I can feel my baby's movement really low. Sometimes it feels like scratching, and other time it's a pain where I have to close my legs to get the pain to go away. When I'm not feeling him move it becomes really hard right below my rib cage, I try and move it but it doesn't move. Is he head down or head up??? Help!
