Graco Pack N Play Portable with rocking seat and changing table? Help

Hi Ladies,

So im not completely sold on getting a crib because my husband and I will be moving soon after baby arrives. Exactly 3.5 months after baby arrives so I was wondering if you guys knew if the Graco Pack N Play are safe for baby. I will put the link below. It seems like a good 4 in 1 (bed, storage, changing area, bassinet) until we move. I only wanted to get the necessities so that we will not have a bunch of heavy weight items (we are moving from NYC to Chicago) and wanted to get the Graco 3 in 1 carseat and the graco pack n play and maybe a rocking chair and a tiny side dresser until we move. Do you ladies think I will absolutely need anything else as far as heavy items? Are Pack and Plays safe for newborns?

My son slept in a pack in play for his first 2 years, while we stayed in a tiny apartment saving for a house. It was pretty much the same one you're looking at, but mine didn't have the infant napper part. It was perfectly fine and actually preferable to a crib for a while because the sides are soft so he didn't hurt himself when he started rolling around bumping his head, also great because we could take it to visit friends or when we traveled, and he could sleep anywhere as well as he did at home.

I do remember him outgrowing the weight limit of the changing table pretty quickly, probably by 2-4 months. He was a chubby baby though. Once they start pulling themselves up you have to lower the bassinet part, it becomes very low...almost to the floor. At that point a crib would have been nice because there are more levels of mattress height.

  • Loading the player...
  • We are getting one of these! We have a three story home and I don't want to fight the stairs, we have had them before and loved them.
  • With DD she slept in a P&P with the bassinet attachment next to my side of the bed for the first 4 months.
  • We are in the same boat, moving just a couple months after having baby, and we recently bought a Graco pack n play very similar to this. I know several people who's newborns sleep in it and I think we'll try it, too. I really want to set up a nursery but haven't decided if it's worth it to do and then move it all a few months later
  • I think it'll be fine for the baby to sleep in it. My daughter hated it but many kids love it. One thing you may want to consider if you'll use it as a bassinet, is to get a better mattress than the one it comes with. The one it comes in is pretty thin so you may want something more firm and stable.
  • PNP's are definitely safe for newborns. We used one for DD for the first few weeks at home. She actually still naps in a PNP daily at our babysitter's. They're also convenient to tote around when visiting family and friends.

Which Graco 3-1 car seat are you looking to get? Just curious because if it's the Nautilus, don't get it as that's only a forward facing seat.

  • I also plan to use a pack and play similar to this also to keep in our room for the first couple months then eventually transition to crib.

Oh I dint notice that. Is there one that is the opposite direction? Thank you!!Do people usually get both the pack and Play and crib?

@Knottie67744546 You need to get a rear facing car seat for newborns. This can be an infant seat with a base or a convertible car seat. It's a personal preference between the 2, but both absolutely need to be rear facing car seats. Graco has plenty of both to choose from. The 3-1 Nautilus is forward facing only and you wont' be able to use it until baby is a toddler at the least.

As for PNP and a crib, we got both. We have a 3 story home, so the PNP stayed on the main floor where we spent most of the day when she was an infant. The crib was in her room on the 2nd floor and was used during night time sleep. Again, a personal preference on what works best for your family!

  • I tried a convertible only car seat for my February babe. I'm an avid baby wearing leader and I STRUGGLED in the cold months. We live in the northeast. I opted for an infant carrier after a month...
  • Both of my kids slept in pack and plays for a long time. It's just so easy. I will say though, we NEVER used any of the attachments for a newborn or the changing area. Don't know why? Just didn't need them I guess. But I love having the pack and play with the two levels to eliminate bending over super far for a while. :)
  • I plan on getting one of these for our downstairs/travel to grandma's.
  • DD slept in the pack n play for several months in our room. The one you've picked out is nice! The one that we have looks more like this one, but ours didn't come with the separate stand to put the napper/changer on: https://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2076723/graco-pack-n-play-portable-napper-changer-playard.jsp?pfm=rrrecs-pdp-gtab1

She first slept in the napper part on top because of its recline. She had some congestion and would only sleep in a bit of a recline. When she started getting too big for that, we moved her to the bassinet part, which is the flat piece that is set up higher on the pack n play (underneath the napper and changer, but you take those off).

We still use the pack n play whenever we go somewhere as her travel bed and she's almost 2.

  • I think a pack n play is perfect for your situation, and you never know, your LO might actually love sleeping in it and you might not end up having to get a traditional crib (unless you want to of course lol). We too are getting a pack n play and my MIL is buying us the traditional crib. Some babies actually prefer sleeping in a pack n play over a crib, just depends I guess. I can't remember what one we are getting but it too had a napper/changing station on top which I totally loved!
Also, you could also consider the infant sleepers that go in the middle of your bed if you wanna save space and money till you move =]
  • @beccabeeee I was actually thinking about using one of those sleepers that go in the middle of the bed. Have you ever used one? I want baby in our room but there is absolutely no space for any thing else especially since we are going to upgrade to a king size bed so we can fit baby in it. This is what we are looking at:

@amw2133 I've actually never used one, this will be my first baby. I live in a small apartment and I had originally wanted the baby to sleep in the room with me and hubby but we decided to use the office as the nursery instead. But, I opted for one of the sleepers anyways just in case baby decides not to sleep in the crib. I'm posting a pic of the one we're getting and it's from babies r us. I also thought it would be a good idea to get because after baby is born and I go back to work, and now hubby has a job, so when someone babysits ill most likely just pack that for them so when baby naps it will be easy to transport and won't take up too much space =]

Lmao I edited because I posted before looking at your link and we were looking at practically the same product lol
  • My 20 month old daughter still sleeps in the P&P when we leave her with my parents. I bought an actual P&P mattress for it, and she sleeps great.
Also, when she was little (0-5 months), she slept on an incline in a rock & play. I LOVED that thing. We tried the crib first for about a week, but as soon as we tried the R&P she started sleeping 8+ hours at night. I kept her in there until she pretty much outgrew it. It was amazing.

  • @MegStark what is a R&P? I'm trying to picture it in my head. I think my mom had mentioned that I put one of these on my registry because babies fall asleep in these very easily and sometimes end up sleeping in them more than their crib sometimes lol but I can't remember for the life of me what they look like.

    R&P is a Rock n Play. :)

  • We have the previous model of this. It's similar to a RNP but doesn't have the hard plastic part. It's all fabric. I think it's a little less expensive, too.

  • RNP's are a life saver, especially for babies (and moms!) with reflux.

  • We have an Arms Reach Co-sleeper we will be using during the first few months. I plan on BF, and this makes it easy during that every two hour phase. It sits right next to the bed, and allows me to just reach over and scoop him up for night feedings. It's great for when you're tight on space, but a pack and play will give you longer use. Even after my nephew got too long for the PnP, we still used the mat for him to sleep on the floor when traveling to relatives. He was a roller there for a while and would fall out of bed after an hour.
  • @beccabeeee great minds think a like! :)
