Flexible spending account

my insurance didn't cover my ultrasound at my doctors when they confirmed pregnancy. I have a flexible spending account through my insurance, can I use that to pay towards the ultrasound? I figure that I can't since its a medical expense that goes towards my deductible but I just wanted to see if anybody else had to go through this. thank you for your input

Re: Flexible spending account

  • Aren't medical expenses what the FSA card is for? That's what we use to pay for any out-of-pocket medical expenses and prescriptions.

  • Yeah
Ive heard of people getting denied before. I just wanted to see. Cant hurt to try :) thanks!
  • Call and ask, also raise some hell with your insurer.... Odd that they don't cover 1st ultrasound. Maybe your provider coded it wrong?

  • Yes my husband pays most of our medical expenses through the FSA account. He has an FSA credit card that was issued.
  • Yes. Any medical expense even after its been run through your insurance. Whatever is left over for you to pay (whether it is denied coverage by insurance or partially covered) can be paid for with an FSA. That being said, FSA companies can be a bitch so make sure you submit in a timely fashion with appropriate paperwork. Thats why things often get denied. They are sticklers.
  • I have a HSA and it pays for any doctor bills.

  • Your card may not work (I used to have an FSA that the card only worked in pharmacies) but any medical expense is eligible, so you can either get reimbursed or request a payment directly to your doctor. FSA funds are limited because they are pre-tax, but any medical, dental, or prescription costs are covered under that. You can even use it for Chiropractic or Acupuncture. Over the counter Meds used to be covered, but now they require a prescription before you can pay for them with FSA funds.

I have an HSA, which is great because the funds roll over to the next year if they are unused and go with me if I leave my job. As long as I use them for medical expenses, it can go into retirement with me.
  • I paid for my ultrasound last pregnancy with an FSA. It was a high enough amount they wanted additional information with it though so don't be surprised if it's kicked back. All we ever needed was an itemized statement to submit to them. They wouldn't accept anything else.
