In agony with my ribs

In one way, relieved that little one is no longer breech as hes turned. BUT ive had the most awful pain in the ribs on my rights constantly for two weeks and its nakering. The way hes lying shows both legs/feet are pushing my right ribs outward and apart... the muscle/nerves around the whole area are sore. I have notified the midwife but is there anyone who could suggest anything to make me more comfortable, less pain or even know if the position the baby is in could be dangerous? Ive understood it could fracture some ribs...

Re: In agony with my ribs

  • I'm in the same boat. I can offer no advice. I hope it gets better soon!!

  • It's called abdominal muscle separation..I have gotten it both pregnancies, usually 31wks to 34 weeks. Worst being 32. Use a heating pad on low, or try holding a pillow to the area and leaning forward into it.. Not sure why, but it's helped me! My dr suggested the heating pad. Then Tylenol if you choose

It does get better! By 34/35 weeks mine was gone with #1, I'm almost 34 weeks and it's bearable. Getting better each day.

I've had two really strong babies and neither has cracked my rib, even tho it felt like it :)
  • Most likely they will say Tylenol and an ice pack or heating pad. Only real solution is to welcome your baby into to world. I have been suffering through the pain for about 5 weeks now. Btw Tylenol did nothing for me. Only thing that helped was to numb it with an ice pack... Sorry you are suffering, but kind of glad I'm not alone. 23 days until my c/s!
  • I am exactly 32 weeks tomorrow bhargrave88

Im glad you said it can get better. I just hope it does... it wakes me from my sleep, i cant sot jor stand.. the pain just intervenes and lasts hours... i might have a 30min break in a day from it. Otherwise its always there... thanks for the reply

Counter pressure to you ribs and lay on your side opposition to the ribs baby's in. Had one rib last time almost broken by baby. And my sister had two broken by my niece. I also push baby around if she's causing too much pain. Just gentlely put pressure on you belly to annoy her to move.
  • Thankyou... an aunt of mine had her daughters foot come through two ribs and she said it was such agony.. she froze one the spot.

I hope it subsides because the back pain gradually gets tougher each week. I dont want to feel like a dead woman walking haha..
  • My son is always in my ribs. I eat a cup of ice and he/she will stop and move!

I have to get a small ice pack like a hard one you put in a cooler or lunch box and pretty much lay on it or press it into my ribs to get the counter pressure and numbing benefit at the same time. So looking forward to having my chest cavity back lol! But also praying he stays put, love my little nugget! But ouch!!
  • Precisely... despite the pain.. you cant help but feel some relief that things are ok as theyre one the move... must say, this is my first child but i never remember mum saying we wriggled 24/7. Ive got myself one active bump... i probably see more of the bathroom for pee breaks than i do of the kitchen itself where i work haha
  • I'm 35 weeks and my baby's butt and feet are always sticking into the right side of my ribs! Although it doesn't really cause pain, there is discomfort. I'm glad he is head down but it is super uncomfortable!
  • Now this makes sense. Thank you for posting. I'm going thru this exact thing. I constantly have to unhook my bra. I need to get nursing tanks now to for relief.
  • Your rib has popped out, go to the chiropractor. Very common in pregnancy mine does it every time.
  • I'm now 36 weeks and the pain is much better than even last week. As soon as I feel the twinges if it I try and stretch, lifting my right arm up to open my chest cavity. Also, I get much better relief from ice rather than heat.
  • I always have ease from cold or ice... heat radiates pain for me. Thank you all... i got admitted to hospital earlier for tests as i had chest pain and breathlessness this morning... in alright. Home and in the bath now to try relax. Little one has turned from being breech... to being the right position but on an angle... he is now directly upside down as suppose to be. But been measured a big baby and with me being 5ft 9 and the father 6 ft 4. A long baby is expected... also taking in that all babies in the family on both sides have been 8, 9 or 10lb plus... acknowledging all these facts... theres no wonder im unable to breathe.. i just wanted to be safe by checking. 8 weeks and counting

I wonder if baby is dropping and that's why you've gotten some relief? If not, it should!
  • My prenatal chiropractor has helped a lot with my rib pain and my doctor gave me lidocaine patches which helps with the pain a little to make it more manageable
  • Thanks for the reply... i hope the pain subsided once the baby drops... i was in pain for 5hours last night... tried feeling each rib to try work out where the tenderness was coming from.. and the first one i touched moved and did a crunch sound... it doesnt sound too good. What worries me is if i have possibly broken a rib, wont this be a danger to little one.
  • Sounds like my situation! His legs favor my right ribs and oh my goodness does it hurt. I have to immediately turn on my right side propping my belly up with a pillow. It almost feels like you can't breath briefly. I'm 36 weeks and don't go to the doctor until the 14th. Hoping he changes positions for some relief!
  • On the same boat, momma! Sometimes it helps me to lean to the left a bit and lift my right arm creating some extra space on that side (at least thats what it feels like) It has seemed to give me temporary relief and the ability to breath a little better.  Don't worry, my midwife told me that when baby drops the pain will go away!  Mine is so bad It hurts to blow my nose sometimes!

DS cracked one of my ribs when I was pregnant with him. It's fairly rare I guess but it is possible and my bones break really easily. In my case there wasn't any danger to baby but it hurt like hell during labor and afterwards. If you think it might be cracked or broken you should probably get it checked out just in case.
  • Been to get it checked. Baby seems happy but being squashed himself.. theres not much help for either of us. They hope the pain will subside when baby drops but it will be sore for a long while yet.
