Nurses Gifts

Has anyone taken gifts to the hospital for the Labor and Delivery nurses as well as the aftercare staff? We did not do this with my first son and then found out this is the "new" thing to do. How necessary is this? If you are planning on doing this what are you taking?

I was planning on bringing cookies or something for them if I have time once I know labor is really starting. (Mostly because baking distracts and relaxes me, and then I can eat a cookie too!)

I have thought about this and I think I am going to print out gift tags that say "You are the balm" and attach a cute lip balm to each one of them. Easy and thoughtful without going overboard.

I am doing little goodie bags- with chocolate candy and some fruity candy....however I'm not sure how many need to be made. Between labor and delivery nurses and postpartum nurses, @ktk427 how many would you suggest??

Just a heads up... having family that works at the hospital... They typically wont eat home made food/baked goods. But any thought is nice. I plan on having DH bring bagels in the morning or something. I didn't do this with my first and didn't even think of it.

I did little buckets of goodies. Target sells these cute metal buckets for a dollar and I filled it with both healthy snacks and chocolate. Now I'm just waiting on a baby to come!

We made up little goody bags and never had the chance to hand them out

We left our bags in the car when we got admitted to the hospital and L&D was so stressful that it was the last thought in our minds. Once we moved to recovery we got our things, but it was like a revolving door with shift changes so we didn't get a chance there either

it stinks because I was so grateful for the staff we had, our nurses we amazing...but in our particular experience it just didn't end up happening. Good luck to you!

We are having our 2nd homebirth with the same midwife & I definitely want to get her something (was too disorganized with 1st to pull anything together)! Love these gift ideas! They're getting my gift giving juices flowing

I second this! I was thinking of healthy & junky snacks! On shift, you're always in the mood for something sweet and then something guilt-free!

Honestly you make what you want to hand out. We don't ever expect anything, and any added treat is such a gift! At the hospital where I work vaginal deliveries you are there approx 48hrs, c/s are 3-5 Days. For a vaginal you can have about 9 different RNs/aides give or take careing for you during your stay (3 different shifts). I have had patients just give to the staff who takes care of them or the whole unit (which depending on the size of the hospital can be a lot. I work on a 39 bed unit with about 10 RNs and 5 aides/secretary's per shift. That's 45 people working in just one day). If you are just giving to the staff taking care of you and are going to be a regular vaginal I would say around 25 bags should be fine (that's for pp and L&D - you shouldn't be in L&D as long as PP so you won't have as many Nurse's).

This is my fear. I'll spend money to have a dessert made and they won't eat it. Honestly, I can't blame them lol they don't know the conditions of a person's home! LOL shoot, I don't eat everyone's cooking either!

I bought a huge box of Cheryls Cookies to bring my nurses. They come pre wrapped so hopefully that eliminates the whole idea of them not wanting to eat something home made (which I totally understand and of course Cheryls tastes wayyyy better than anything I could make)!Plus then I can have some for myself hehe
